Summer Excursion Destinations and Activities in Nassfeld
#1: The Gartnerkofel: One of the top scenic spots for magnificent sunrises in Nassfeld is the summit of the Gartnerkofel (2,195 m). If you prefer a more leisurely start to your day, simply take the chairlift. At the mountain station (almost 1,900 m), you will discover the Geotrail, a panoramic terrace with the Sky Plate affording breathtaking views, and the Almrausch mountain playground with a marble run. For mountaineers, the Gartnerkofel has yet another highlight in store: The Däumling (rated B/C) is about 500 meters long, featuring the spectacular 40-meters-long Nepal Bridge, and ascending about 150 vertical meters.
At the foot of Gartnerkofel, you have a good chance of spotting a true rarity: the blue-petaled Wulfenia, which grows only in Nassfeld – with related species found in the Himalayas and Albania – and is strictly protected.
#2: Madritschen with the Aqua Trail and Via Dolce Vita: You can reach the Madritschen from the Sonnenalpe using the Madritschen chairlift, or make your way up from Tröpolach on the Millennium Express. One highlight on the Madritschen is the Aqua Trail: this 1.5 km themed path features multiple interactive stations (dam building, water fountains, trampolines, playgrounds...) and a picnic area by the reservoir. Perfect for hot summer days in Nassfeld – and fun for the whole family! And why not make your return via the Via Dolce Vita, with Vespas, play areas, and panoramic loungers for you to discover on the Italian side of Nassfeld.
#3: Pendolino Alpine Coaster: The longest Alpine slide in Carinthia takes you at a rapid tempo from the Madritschen (Millennium Express mountain station) to the Tressdorfer Alm (Millennium Express mid-station); two kilometers long and descends 400 vertical meters start to finish. Children under 7 ride must ride with an adult. Good to know: The Millennium Express mountain station is also the starting point for the Madritschen Tour (leading back to the Sonnenalpe) as well as the Aqua Trail.
#4: And … Action! Rock Labyrinth and Flying Fox XXL, Dondolo Swing: The Pendolino Alpine slide, the outdoor adventure park with zipline, high ropes course, and rock labyrinth, and the gigantic Dondolo swing that swings you up to 21 meters above the ground… Nassfeld has many thrilling offers in store for you during the summer months. And all are accessible using the Millennium Express or the Madritschen 6-seater chairlift.
#5: Biking in Nassfeld: Mountain bike trails, single tracks, a flow trail on the mountain, and leisurely bike paths in the valley: The opportunities for cyclists, mountain bikers, and downhillers in the Nassfeld-Pressegger See holiday region are truly impressive! The three summer cableways – the Millennium Express, Madritschen, and Gartnerkofel – also allow you to bring your bikes. Interesting fact: Some of today’s bike trails were once used as secret smuggling routes.
#6: Malurch: This historic mountain was directly on the front line that ran through Nassfeld during World War I. Today, old military positions and two tunnels, through which the hiking trail leads on the way up to the summit at 1,899 m, still bear witness to that time. Once at the top, you can ring the summit bell, which is typical in Italy. More relics from this turbulent period, such as trenches and tunnels, can be found on the Kleiner Pal and in the open-air museum on Plöcken Pass.
#7: Pressegger See: During a summer holiday in Nassfeld, you don’t have to choose between mountains and lake – you can have them both! Pressegger See near Hermagor, about 24 km from Nassfeld Pass, warms up to 28° C in summer, attracting swimmers and fans of water sports. Options include swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, or a visit to the 1st Carinthian Adventure Park. A 6 km Slow Trail for leisurely hikers and walkers circles the lake and through the reeds along the shoreline. If the weather chooses not to cooperate, visit the Aquarena in Kötschach-Mauthen (directly adjacent to ALPS RESORT Chalets & Glamping Nassfeld). There, you will find an indoor pool with a slide along with an outdoor pool.
