Nothing against pumpkin-spice latte and sweet-potato burgers. But have you ever tried these specialties which will soon be in season again around our ALPS RESORTS?

Salzburger Land: Harvest Festival with Bauernkrapfen and Apfelkiachl

Between the end of August and October, it is Harvest Festival season in Salzburger Land. Then, in 27 participating communities, around 2000 events will be held to celebrate harvesttime. These include the Bärtlmafest in Piesendorf, the HeuArt Fest in Annaberg, the big Almabtrieb fair in Radstadt (every 2 years) and Harvest Festival celebrations in Rauris. Traditional specialties served at festivities such as these include sweet Bauernkrapfen and Apfelkiachl doughnuts.
For the Apfelkiachl, the (sourish) apples are peeled, sliced into rings, dipped in batter, then fried in hot fat. Before serving, they are dusted with cinnamon and sugar. Bauernkrapfen, made from a yeast dough, are served with lingonberry jam or confectioner's sugar. If you prefer something more savory, why not try some sauerkraut.
For ALPS RESORTS accommodation tips during Salzburg Harvest Festival, please click here, the recipe for Bauernkrapfen is shared with you by Sophie from the Gainschnigg Alm in Raurisertal.

Tyrol: Törggelen with hot chestnuts and new wine

The Törggelen tradition actually comes from South Tyrol. In autumn, after a stroll through the vineyards, people gather for a drink and bite to eat in a local wine tavern.  The menu may include barley soup, a hearty grill platter of spareribs, roast meat and sauerkraut, along with hot chestnuts as a dessert. And as the perfect accompaniment, you can "permit" yourself a "new" or "sweet" wine. In the area around Innsbruck and our Bergeralm Chalets, there are numerous inns that offer the Törggelen experience. Otherwise, from the Bergeralm Chalets over the Brenner Pass, you are not at all far from Merano or Bolzano where Törggelen is well and truly celebrated.

Styria, Ennstal: Schladminger Krapfen

"I prefer mine with honey", reveals Sissy, who looks after reservations and sales for ALPS RESORTS in the Styrian Ennstal. She is talking about Schladminger Krapfen, a specialty of her region. These are doughnuts made from a yeast dough, fried in clarified butter. You can eat them – just like Sissy – as a sweet variant, or fill the doughnuts with Steirerkas cheese. Ennstaler Steirerkas is a so-called Mürbkäse, in other words a cheese made of sour low-fat milk with a sharp smell. The cheese is crumbled to give it a clumpy, marbled consistency.

Carinthia: Cheese Festival in Kötschach

"Total Cheese" is the befitting motto in Kötschach at the end of September: The stars of the show at this international cheese festival are this savory milk product in general and outstanding Gailtaler Almkäse in particular. The latter has even won awards and is produced at 13 different mountain huts in Gailtal. The region surrounding Chalets & Glamping Nassfeld is very special from a culinary point of view since it is also the world's first Slow Food Travel Destination. Thanks to exciting offers, during your holidays you have the opportunity to peek over the food producers' shoulders as they go about their work, or even lend them a hand personally.
