Mur cycle path in Styria

What is the Mur Cycle Path?

The Mur Cycle Path is one of the longest and most diverse riverside cycle paths in Austria. The route runs for around 453 kilometres from Muhr in the Lungau region to Legrad in Croatia, where the Mur flows into the Drava. Along the route, you cross Salzburg, Styria and a small part of Slovenia and Croatia. The landscape is constantly changing, from alpine flair in the Lungau region to a Mediterranean climate in the south.

The path is divided into eight routes, which can be combined depending on your level of fitness, time and preferences. The Mur Cycle Path's second route is a favourite among holidaymakers in the Kreischberg region: It runs from St. Michael im Lungau to Murau and is considered to be particularly family-friendly and scenic.

Route 02 highlights: St. Michael im Lungau to Murau

This route is around 53 kilometres long and is ideal for a relaxed cycling tour. The path is well signposted and tarmacked throughout, and the gentle gradient makes it suitable for families with children. The section also gives you numerous opportunities to discover and explore. These highlights await you along the route:

  • St. Michael im Lungau is where this route starts. The cosy village centre with its cafés and small shops is perfect as a first stop for refreshments or a final equipment check before setting off.
  • Tamsweg is around ten kilometres further downstream. The historic market square, an imposing pilgrimage church and several inns are the ideal place to take your first break.
  • Mauterndorf with its impressive medieval castle is a highlight for history buffs. The view of the Lungau region from the top is well worth the climb.
  • Ramingstein, just before the border with Styria, impresses with its quiet location, beautiful Mur passages and Finstergrün castle at the top of the village.
  • Sankt Lorenzen is right on the cycle path and is home to several ALPS RESORTS. Here you will find cosy places to stop for refreshments, small shops for snacks or drinks and play areas for children. If you are staying at one of our resorts, you will be able to start or end your tour from the comfort of your accommodation.
  • Murau is where this route ends. The lively old town with its colourful façades, Murau Castle, brewery museum and charming beer gardens provide the perfect setting for a relaxing end to your tour.
