Depending on how they are prepared, they may help with stomach and intestinal issues, as well as with mouth and throat inflammations.
They are also believed to benefit eyesight (anthocyanins support vision and help protect against eye diseases) and promote heart and vascular health. Studies suggest wild blueberries can even improve brain function and strengthen memory – making them little concentration boosters.

Our 5 Tips for Picking Wild Blueberries
- Timing is everything: Wild blueberries typically ripen between July and September. The best time to pick them is early in the morning, when the berries are still cool and firm. Be sure to pick only fully ripe, deep-blue berries – they have the best flavor and are perfect for your blueberry fritters.
- Where do wild blueberries grow? These small blue berries thrive in acidic, nutrient-poor soil, often in open woodlands or heaths. Look for spots off the beaten track, away from busy hiking trails or roads, so you can harvest clean, unpolluted berries for your fritters.
- Gentle picking: Pluck the berries carefully to avoid crushing these delicate fruits. It’s best to harvest them one by one by hand rather than using a berry comb, so you don’t harm the plants or negatively affect future harvests.
- What to bring: Use a shallow basket or a plastic or glass container that’s not too deep, ensuring the berries won’t get squashed. Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes – ones you don’t mind getting dirty – and sturdy shoes, since the terrain can be quite uneven.
- Respect nature: Only pick as many berries as you really need. Leave enough for wildlife and to allow the plants to keep reproducing naturally. In some areas, there are rules or limits on foraging for wild berries, so be sure to follow local guidelines.
