The valley, around 40 km long, stretches from Bludenz to the Silvretta High Alpine Road and connects towns such as Schruns, Tschagguns, Gaschurn and Gargellen. You can easily reach the Montafon via Bludenz in Vorarlberg. By car, take the A14 Rheintal motorway to Bludenz and from there follow the well-maintained Montafonerstraße into the valley. By train, travel to Bludenz and change there onto the Montafonerbahn, which will take you directly to Schruns.
At 3,312 metres, Piz Buin is the highest mountain in the region and a popular destination for experienced mountaineers. Other notable peaks include: Silvrettahorn (3,244 m), Dreiländerspitze (3,197 m), Großer Litzner (3,109 m) and Vermuntkopf (2,851 m).

The ski resort links Schruns with Tschagguns, St. Gallenkirch and Gaschurn. Schruns lies at an altitude of 690 metres above sea level and is regarded as the main town of the Montafon region.

The Hochjochbahn in Schruns, the Golmerbahn, and the cable cars in Gargellen and the Silvretta Montafon are open in summer.
