Diverse Ski Areas in Austria – A Slope for Every Expectation
An Austrian ski holiday caters to every taste, and we'd like to introduce you to some winter sports gems.
1. Ski Amadé in Salzburger Land and Styria – Endless Piste Enjoyment
Ski Amadé is expansive, offering 760 km of pistes and 270 lifts—in other words, no need to unclip your skis ever again! There is no shortage of variety either, ranging from fun slopes to snow parks. It's a haven for families, pros, and recreational skiers alike. Better still: the region even hosts a legendary Gourmet Wine Week.
The Ski Amadé ski association includes a total of 25 resorts in 5 top regions in Salzburger Land and Styria: Salzburger Sportwelt, Grossarltal, Gasteinertal, Hochkönig and Schladming-Dachstein with the versatile 4-mountain ski area, which is often used by world-class athletes for training.
2. Saalbach-Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn – Home of Lässig
The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm is well known as a venue for major sporting events such as the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in February 2025 and other highlight events such as Rave on Snow, the BERGFESTival and the White Pearl Mountain Days. On the other hand, for its great offer for winter sports enthusiasts with 270 kilometers of slopes, 70 state-of-the-art lifts and around 60 ski huts and restaurants.
3. KitzSki – All-Round Sophistication
If you're the type who values après-ski and a stylish setting just as much as the skiing itself, then Kitzbühel will definitely be the perfect playground for you. This chic ski resort is a magnet for the glitterati, thanks to its bustling calendar of music and sporting events, including the legendary Hahnenkamm race. The KitzSki region extends over 233 kilometers of pistes and stretches from Mittersill/Hollersbach in Salzburger Land via Kitzbühel to Kirchberg in Tirol.
4. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis – The Family-Friendly Resort
This ski area in Western Tyrol is ideal for children and beginners, thanks to its wide slopes that are also perfect for carving. With 214 km of runs, freeriders and snowboarders also find dedicated areas and fun parks of their own.
5. SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental
The SkiWelt is advertised as “insanely big” - and rightly so: 275 km of pistes, more than 80 modern lifts and 80 ski huts, fun parks, speed runs and Austria's largest night skiing area await skiers in the Tyrolean ski region on the Wilder Kaiser. The 8 villages from which you can access the SkiWelt are around 1 hour's drive from Munich.
6. Silvretta Montafon
The Silvretta Montafon ski area inspires with its 140 kilometers of slopes, 37 lifts and sporting challenges. These include the 5 Black Scorpions pistes with a gradient of up to 67% and the Montafon Totale Ski. This ski circuit covers 45 kilometers of slopes and 10,000 vertical meters. The starting point is the Hochjochbahn, from whose mountain station the longest continuous downhill run in Vorarlberg leads over 12 km and 1,700 vertical meters into the valley.
Winter Magic Off the Slopes: From Sledding to Romantic Winter Walks
An Austrian ski vacation offers you a wealth of sporting opportunities beyond the downhill runs themselves, whether you're looking to expend some physical energy outdoors or take it down a notch or two
Needless to say, romantic winter hikes are particularly popular with couples. Along gloriously scenic routes, you can relish the breathtaking alpine vistas at your leisure. Set out on your own or join up with a guided tour, giving you valuable additional insights into the local wildlife and geological wonders of the region.
Sledding promises perfect enjoyment for families with children. For instance, Styria's longest sled run is located on the Loser. A lift carries you up the mountain effortlessly, after which you will be able to zoom down the 9 kilometers-long panoramic road. Over in Zillertal meanwhile, the Spieljoch sled run begins at an impressive elevation of 2,000 meters and is accessible via gondola.
Who says cross-country skiing is only for valleys and lowland areas? Austria definitely proves otherwise. A must-visit for any cross-country fan is the alpine trail at up to 2,000 meters above sea level on Bielerhöhe in the Silvretta Montafon region. Sun-worshippers will find 220 km of groomed trails on the sunny plateau of Ramsau am Dachstein. Even higher, on the Dachstein at an elevation of 2,700 meters, the world's highest glacier cross-country ski trail awaits you.
From ice skating to curling to idyllic carriage rides, all kinds of other outdoor activities are just waiting for you to discover during your ski holiday in Austria. Many of these magical moments can also be enjoyed during your dog-friendly holiday in Austria.
Culinary Delights in the Snow – Austria’s Gastronomic Highlights
Nothing works up an appetite like physical activity in the great outdoors, especially in the chill of winter. The Austrian Alps offer numerous mountain huts and restaurants where you can refuel with traditional dishes. Expect hearty fare: think flour and egg-based dishes, bacon and meat, dumplings and potatoes, along with a variety of soups and stews to get you right back on your feet.
Each region has its own unique offerings that extend beyond the stereotypical staples such as Wiener Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn.
Take, for example, the Tyrolean-style Gröstl, a dish made from potatoes, pork, onions, and spices like marjoram and caraway, all topped with a fried egg. The popular Kaspressknödel, or cheese dumplings, serve as both main courses and accompaniments for soups and stews. These dumplings come in countless variations, filled with meat, cheese, or even fruit, ranging from savory to sweet.
For those with a sweet tooth, Austrian cuisine offers a veritable paradise of delicacies, from apricot dumplings and Buchteln to crepes. Adding a cherry on top is Austria's renowned hospitality, complete with a unique charm all its own, referred to as "Schmäh."

FAQ
The family-friendly destinations in the Alpine region are perfectly tailored to “next-generation” athletes. Particularly in larger ski areas like the Zillertal Arena, around Serfauss-Fass-Ladis, or in the 4 Mountain Ski Area in Schladming-Dachstein, ski schools and beginner slopes offer an ideal start. At the same time, fun parks guarantee all the action and variety you could possibly wish for.
Most ski areas open their slopes at the end of November. The Advent and Christmas season offers an especially cozy atmosphere, not least when local traditions are celebrated at quaint, romantic Christmas markets. Ideal snow conditions usually prevail in January and February. Depending on the area and weather conditions, the season may well last until about mid-to-late April.
It is currently not possible to book a holiday at ALPS RESORTS with ski passes. However, guests in the Schladming-Dachstein Region can pre-book their ski passes online: Order ski pass
