Winter holidays in Hohentauern
Hohentauern is probably one of the most snow-sure winter sports resorts in Styria. For your next vacation in a holiday home, that means: landscapes covered in deep snow, white glitter carpets, perfectly groomed ski slopes and cross-country ski trails are waiting for you right outside the front door!
Families and winter sports enthusiasts can also experience a lot away from the ski slopes: how about a snowshoe hike or a ski tour through the Styrian mountains? A leisurely stroll along the winter hiking trail offers the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind at the northernmost point of the Mur Valley.
Skiing Holidays next to the ski slopes
What would a winter holiday in a holiday home be without a ski slope? If you are looking for an insider tip for leisure skiers, you will quickly find it here in Upper Styria:
With 4 ski lifts and 12 kilometers of slopes, the ski area right next to your holiday home is relatively small. Families with children or winter sports enthusiasts looking for relaxation could hardly find a more suitable ski destination than Hohentauern. Far away from après-ski parties, where there is closeness to nature and "soft tourism", you can enjoy slopes of all levels of difficulty. The slopes have been awarded the Styrian slope seal of quality and thus promise the best conditions for a successful ski holiday.
There is a ski school for children or beginners, and the ski shop with ski rental is right next to the Hohentauern holiday village. Guests in Hohentauern are only about 200 m apart from pure skiing fun in the Murtal.
If you want to visit a larger ski area during your holiday in Hohentauern, you can take a day trip to the Lachtal, 40 km away, also located in the Murtal. Schladming, the most famous ski area in Styria, can be reached within 40 minutes by car.
Cross-country skiing in Hohentauern
Only 150 m from your chalet or holiday home is the next entry into the 18 km network of trails in Hohentauern. Numerous day visitors and of course families who spend their winter holidays in the Murtal rave about the cross-country ski trails in Hohentauern.
What is particularly appreciated about the trails: no crowds of cross-country skiers, no queuing. Pure winter fun. Lots of space. The opportunity to explore the landscape at your own pace, to consciously experience this somewhat different, quiet winter sports resort in Styria.
Some of the trails that have been awarded the Styrian seal of approval are covered with snow, the entire route is perfectly groomed and offers sporting challenges of all levels of difficulty.
Winter holiday fun in Murtal - Styria
Even away from the groomed ski slopes and cross-country trails, you get your money's worth in Hohentauern. Anyone who has ever visited Upper Styria knows the mountains around our holiday homes. Mountains that are made for winter sports in the midst of untouched natural landscapes.
Demanding ski mountaineering on the Geierkogel, which is over 2,000 m high, or leisurely ski tours on the big stallion - in Hohentauern ski tourers will find everything their hearts desire. A small excerpt from the extensive range of different ski tours in Hohentauern and Murtal can be found on the tourism association's website.
Take the toboggan taxi up to the Edelrautehütte, enjoy a hearty snack or a Kaiserschmarren up there at 1,800 m above sea level, and then take the toboggan down the mountain. - Sounds like an unforgettable afternoon during your next winter vacation in the holiday home, doesn't it? You can borrow the sledges from the ski shop or from the Edelrautehütte.
You can explore Hohentauern on a “big foot” on a snowshoe hike. You can tramp over white glitter carpets over gentle hills up to mountain peaks. Guided snowshoe tours can be booked on site, our team will be happy to advise you on the range of guided hikes before you arrive.
We have kept an important tip until the end: legs that have become tired from snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or skiing can best recover in the feel-good atmosphere of your holiday home. So plan enough time for relaxation “at home” in the evening!
Summer holidays in Hohentauern in Styria
"To be a little closer to heaven", with your thoughts wandering into the distance and enjoying the unique view of the Trieben and Rottenmann Tauern mountains from the terrace of your holiday home - this is a special kind of experience for every mountain-loving chalet holidaymaker.
Hohentauern has a history of more than 2000 years as a pass crossing. The Romans built the first paved pass road over the "Tauern". Even if the town of Hohentauern can be easily reached by car, it has been spared from mass tourism to this day.
The smallest municipality in Styria in terms of inhabitants is therefore ideally suited for holidaymakers looking for peace and quiet who appreciate a break in a chalet in the mountains of Austria.
The summer holiday in the Murtal has a lot to offer not only for families, but also for groups of friends and couples. In combination with our extensive range of holiday homes and chalets in Hohentauern, the leisure activities in the Mur Valley offer an ideal package for a successful holiday in Styria.
Hiking holidays in Hohentauern
Carefree hiking pleasure in the Murtal - which nature lover doesn't long for it. Whether families, leisurely hikers or top mountaineers, there are countless destinations in Austria's first sports village. And the best: Your holiday home or chalet is the ideal starting point for these mountain adventures in Styria. You can go up to heights of up to 2,500 m directly from the holiday home.
You have to visit crystal clear mountain lakes such as the Frozen Lake, the Scheiblseen and the Stegerteich. Even if a jump into the (really) cool water is only dared by hard-boiled hikers, it is a very special moment for everyone to pause for a moment after the ascent and marvel at the beauty of these hidden places in green Styria .
As a stop-off point, we recommend a break at the Edelrautehütte at 1,800 m above sea level. From there it is not far to the tour around the Scheiblsee, a mountain lake embedded in the picturesque backdrop of the Styrian mountains.
The view from breathtaking peaks such as the Großer Bösenstein (2,448 m) and picturesque valleys such as the Pölsen and Triebental make it easy to lose yourself in your thoughts on a hike through the Styrian natural landscapes. You can be sure of many encounters with local forest dwellers!
There is also a very special family hike: on the way up to the Edelrautehütte, fairytale characters tell you the legend of the "Gretl vom Bösenstein". Look forward to the story! - The accompanying fairy tale book is available at the reception during your stay in your chalet or holiday home.
And for all those who would much rather relax in the chalet's whirlpool and marvel at the mountains from there, the following leisure activities could help to conquer their weaker self:
The 7 heavenly cloud banks are a selection of various hiking routes. There are cloud banks to rest along the tours. If you hike at least 3 cloud places during your holiday in Styria, you will receive a heavenly cloud cup. With the knowledge that you've earned this cup hard, your next coffee is sure to taste even better!
Biking holidays in Hohentauern
It's best to get on your mountain bike early in the morning, because you will find exciting mountain bike trails in front of your holiday home! Quaint huts and beautiful excursion destinations in the Murtal can be easily reached by mountain bike at any time. The region around Hohentauern also has a lot to offer for mountain bike beginners and is very diverse!
The Triebenstein tour, the Hölleralm tour, the tour up to the Edelrautehütte or the route to the Bergerhube are particularly popular with our guests.
The Hohentauern Tourist Office has summarized more information about the route, the level of difficulty and the duration of these mountain bike tours in this folder.
Element water
What could be nicer than throwing your fishing rod into crystal clear mountain water on a summer's day and catching a fish framed by the Hohentauern mountains - probably not much for passionate fishermen or holidaymakers who want to try this hobby!
In Hohentauern there are several fish ponds in which you can fish. Day tickets for the Weberteich (approx. 1.5 km from the chalet) or the Großer Scheiblsee, which can be reached within 2 km of your holiday home, can be purchased from the hosts in Hohentauern.
As the crowning glory of this day's holiday in the Murtal, the fish caught will be grilled on the terrace of your holiday home - it will definitely taste particularly good!
