Downhill Skiing in the Kitzbühel Alps
In winter, Kitzbühel is famous for its abundant snow, perfectly groomed pistes, and the fairytale city itself. This city of sport is bordered by the world-famous Hahnenkamm, the Südberge mountains and the Kitzbüheler Horn. From October until early May, ski fans travel to Kitzbühel in order to enjoy this winter paradise firsthand. One of the most modern and biggest ski areas in the region is KitzSki. It is located between the Hahnenkamm and Kitzbüheler Horn at elevations up to 2000 meters. On 188 km of perfectly groomed pistes, you can look forward to a variety-packed day of skiing. Whether you are a beginner or ready for the awe-inspiring Streif, there is something here for everybody. For its part, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental offers the greatest array of mountain adventures anywhere in the Alps. The ski area extends for over 288 kilometers of beautifully maintained pistes served by 90 lifts. Meanwhile, 80 huts and chalets provide for refreshment opportunities as needed. Incidentally: The new SkiWelt Tour allows you to make a “lap” of SkiWelt involving 37 lifts and 84 km of pistes.

The Sports Trail on the Kitzbühel Schwarzsee-Reith Golf Course is floodlit daily until 9 PM, perfect for everyone in search of a very special cross-country experience. Incidentally: If you are an overnight guest in Kitzbühel, use of the ski trails is free. With or without snowshoes – walk along sundrenched scenic paths and enjoy the snowy mountain world of Tyrol.
Sledding & Ice Skating in the Kitzbühel Alps
Any winter holiday simply has to include an exhilarating sled ride, of course. In and around Kitzbühel, you will discover numerous sledding hills, such as on the Kelchalm in Aurach near Kitzbühel, the Trattenbachalm on the Jochberg, Talkaser-Schrandlhof in Westendorf and the Brixenbachalm in Brixen im Thale. The region also has lots of action on the ice to offer as well. In Kitzbühel, you will discover the only indoor curling center in Austria. In the town center of Westendorf, the ice rink there invites you to show off your best figure-skating moves. And on Sportberg Gaisberg in Kirchberg, there is a 20 meters-tall (manmade) ice tower, where you can sharpen your ice-climbing skills. Ice hockey and ice stock are also extremely popular in the region. As you can see, there will be no shortage of variety during your winter holiday in the Kitzbühel Alps.
Summer Holidays in the Kitzbühel Alps
Hiking in the Kitzbühel Alps
From St. Johann in Tirol and the city of Kitzbühel to Brixental, Leukental and Pillerseetal – the Kitzbühel district truly has a lot to offer. So it was that, in 2019, Kitzbühel was the first Tyrolean region to be awarded the European Hiking Seal of Quality. No wonder, since the gentle mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps are an absolute delight for hikers and mountain lovers in general. The peaks in the Kitzbühel region reach heights of as much as 2400 meters. One of them is particularly prominent: the 2362 m tall “Grosser Rettenstein”. With its double summit, it is one of the most striking mountains in the holiday region of Tyrol, also bordering on the Pinzgau district in Salzburger Land. Yet another highlight: a hike up the 2000 m high Kitzbüheler Horn or along the Jochberg Water Path. Also be sure to explore the Drachensteig trail on the Jochberg or the kid-friendly Adventure Camp in Reith near Kitzbühel.
Summer Lifts in the Kitzbühel Alps
If you prefer to spare yourself those initial elevation gains, simply have one of the summer lifts carry you up the mountain. For example, the Alpenrosenbahn in Westendorf. Once at the top, between the Talkaser (1770 m) and Choralpe (1820 m) you can look forward to a true family experience, with attractions certain to appeal to all young explorers and hikers. Other family tips if you plan to ride the summer lifts: Witches’ Waters in Söll Hohe Salve and Ellmi’s Magic World in Ellmau. The Kitzbühel Alps Sommer Card is in some ALPS RESORTS included and is your ticket to a grand total of 38 different lifts in the region. Our excursion tips
Alpinolino
Right next to the mountain station of the Alpenrosenbahn cable car at 1,770 m above sea level, the whole family turns into detectives of nature. In the discovery park Alpinolino Westendorf, animal riddles and exciting discovery missions are waiting for you. Whether it's the groundhog rally, the squirrel long-jump-competition or the "Spoggolino" ball track – you'll be literally rolled over by adventure opportunities.
After the action-packed detective work, it's time for some rest and relaxation. Only 45 minutes away from Alpinolino, the Kreuzjöchl lake invites you to unwind. The popular hiking trail there offers a fantastic view of the Hohe Tauern, as well as the Kitzbühel and Zillertal Alps.
Hohe Salve
At 1,829 m above sea level, the Hohe Salve not only stands out as the highest point in the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental, but also offers an unforgettable panoramic view of the region. The Hopfgarten and Söll cable cars make it possible to reach the summit without much effort.
At the top, enjoy the view of over 70 three-thousand-meter peaks in the rotating panorama restaurant "Umadum-Stuben". Just around the corner is the over 400-year-old "Salvenkirchlein", the highest pilgrimage church in Austria. The popular “Sonnenuhrenweg” leads the way around the summit with 15 sundial stations. The wind harp, meanwhile, invites you to listen to the sounds of the wind.
Schwarzsee Kitzbühel
Kitzbühel not only has the Streif and Hahnenkamm to offer, but also plenty of swim activities for the whole family. The 15 ha Schwarzsee is one of the warmest bathing lakes in Tyrol. Water temperatures of up to 27 degrees are common.
Those who have had enough of swimming can rent a rowing boat or prove stamina and strength at the nearby fitness parkour. Hiking enthusiasts are best off strolling along the “Drei-Seen-Rundwanderweg".
Insider tip: In the early morning hours, the Wilder Kaiser mountain is reflected in the Schwarzsee - a sight worth seeing.
Fortress Kufstein
Once a border town between Bavaria and Tyrol, today a popular host of theatre and concert events: The 800-year-old fortress serves as the backdrop for numerous events and is also the landmark of the Kufstein district.
The fortress casts a spell over visitors both young and old. On a guided tour, you can immerse yourself in the past and learn more about the exciting history of the walls.
The "Heldenorgel" in the Kufstein Fortress is also a special attraction: with 4,948 pipes, it is the largest free organ in the world. Every day the bell chimes in memory of all victims of war and calls for peace.
Tip 5: Wildpark Aurach
At 1,080 m above sea level, 4 km south of Kitzbühel, lies a paradise for animal lovers. With a total of 40 ha, the Aurach Wildlife Park is the largest outdoor enclosure in Tyrol. In the meantime, more than 200 alpine animal species have found their home here. Kangaroos, llamas and Tibetan yaks are also part of the Wildpark family.
In the "Wildspielpark", children are introduced to the animal species that call the Wildpark home with a wide variety of games and riddles. The petting zoo "Streichelstadl" is a highlight, especially for the little visitors. Here, children dare to get close to rabbits, donkeys, goats, llamas and sheep. Afterwards, enjoy Tyrolean delicacies with herbs from the in-house herb garden at the Brandnerhofstube.

Feedback from our guests
The location is pretty good, beautifully located on the mountain with a great view. The room is big enough and very modern. Looks like it was freshly renovated. Even a TV per bed. The curtain is not perfectly attached, but provides sufficient coverage. Balcony is large and well equipped. Communication also worked great, I'll be happy to come back.
We went skiing here for a week in February and really loved it. The apartment is super centrally located. It takes less than 2 minutes to get to the ski lift. In general everything is very modern and clean. The kitchen is fully equipped and we had a lot of fun cooking together. There is also a large ski cellar with heated racks for drying ski equipment. We were really very satisfied. As a small piece of feedback, I would say that the ventilation in the ski cellar could be improved somewhat. In terms of service, everything went smoothly, both at check-in and check-out. A special point I would like to emphasize is that people here really do move mountains if necessary and take it for granted! Specifically, we had a breakdown with our car, it wouldn't start and after a short phone call to reception, Micha did everything he could without hesitation to help us out of the trouble. Really thank you again for this! See you next time :)
Wonderful place, super modern-minimal design, spacious apartments, large terraces, own garage, ski equipment storage with boot heating and if there is a lot of snow, you can slide onto the terrace 😁 Love it, we'll go again next year.
