Butler Program at Turracher Höhe
Activity program with Piste Butler for your winter vacation in Carinthia
The Butler Program at Turracher Höhe is more than just an extra offering during your winter vacation at Turracher Höhe. The focus is on the slope butler and personalized service in the ski area. The whole experience is complemented by special, exclusive activities—from an early start on the slopes to guided hiking tours through the snow-covered Nockberge Mountains.
I tested the concept for a day: early morning skiing before the lifts officially open, encounters with the Pisten Butler right on the slopes, a look behind the scenes, and to top it off, a torchlight hike around Lake Turracher See. The result: a meticulously planned winter day with real added value—exciting, varied, and significantly more than a classic day of skiing.
What is the difference between Piste Butler, the Butler Program, and the Butler Card?
Piste Butler, Butler Program, Butler Card – they sound similar, but they mean different things. Here’s a quick overview so you know exactly what each one is.
Piste Butler
The Piste Butler is part of the Winter Butler program in the Turracher Höhe – and probably its best-known feature. You can experience it as part of guided tours, either in a group or individually through the “Rent a Butler” service. A local guide will accompany you through the ski area, show you the best spots, and provide insights you wouldn’t normally get.
On the other hand, you’ll also run into the Piste Butler quite easily during your day of skiing: in the morning, right on the slopes. There, he hands out little surprises like drinks or snacks—free of charge, no registration required, and on a “first come, first served” basis. Starting around early March, organic ice cream from the mountain farm is often added at the Kornockbahn valley station, also while supplies last.
Butlercard
The Butlercard is a classic summer product in the Turracher Höhe region and is closely linked to the Almbutler and the Summer Butler Program. You cannot purchase it separately; instead, you receive it automatically when you stay at one of the so-called Butler establishments—such as the ALPS RESORTS. The Turracher Höhe Butlercard works similarly to other summer guest cards, which include numerous services and benefits as part of your stay.
These include unlimited use of the Kornock and Panorama cable cars, a 50% discount daily on a ride on the Nocky Flitzer, discounted bike transport, and discounts on bike courses and guided tours. In addition, participation in the Almbutler outdoor program, featuring guided hikes and nature experiences, is included free of charge. Further discounts are also available at selected partner businesses in the region. The Butlercard is valid for the entire duration of your stay and is generally available from approximately June through October. The exact services included may vary slightly depending on the season and the current program.
Butler Program
The Butler Program at Turracher Höhe is one of the special highlights of a winter vacation and the region’s central experiential offering—in both summer and winter. Instead of exploring the ski area or the surrounding area on your own, you can participate in organized activities here and experience the region together with a guide or “butler.” It’s not just about activities, but above all about gaining additional insights, background knowledge, and special moments beyond the typical ski day or hiking vacation. In winter, the focus is primarily on snow and skiing experiences, such as early morning skiing before the lifts officially open, snowshoe hikes, winter hikes, or torchlight hikes around Lake Turracher See, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the ski area. In summer, the program shifts more toward nature and outdoor experiences, such as guided hikes with the Almbutler, family programs, the interactive AlmZeit hike with Nocky, a treasure hunt at the gold panning site, or a ride on the Nocky Flitzer.
Early Morning Skiing on the Turracher Höhe
Hit the slopes early in the morning with the Piste Butler
Early Morning Skiing is one of the first items on the Butler Program—and honestly: exactly the reason why you’d willingly get up early here, even on vacation. Even before the lifts officially open, you head up the mountain together with the Pistenbutler. The slopes are freshly groomed, empty, and quiet—perfect conditions. No waiting, no dodging, no stress. That even lures late sleepers like me out of bed early in the morning. It’s especially ideal in March. In the morning, the snow conditions are top-notch; later, the sun comes out. It’s exactly this combination that makes spring skiing on the Turracher Höhe so special.
The Turracher Höhe is also a great spot for snowboarders, with its wide, easy-to-navigate slopes. Perfect if—like me—you’re getting back on the board after a long break. The conditions are relaxed, the terrain is varied, and there’s plenty of room to get back into the swing of things. And if you don’t have your own gear with you, you can easily rent skis or a snowboard on-site at Früh Sports or INTERSPORT Brandstätter.
In total, the Turracher Höhe ski area offers around 43 kilometers of slopes with a balanced mix of blue, red, and black runs. Thanks to its altitude of over 1,800 meters, the Turracher Höhe is considered to have particularly reliable snow conditions—ideal for a relaxing ski vacation in Carinthia and Styria. In addition, there are modern lift facilities and many huts for a break in between runs. Families and leisure skiers especially appreciate the wide, clearly laid-out slopes and the peaceful atmosphere without the typical après-ski hustle and bustle.
Piste Butler on a snowmobile:
A break on the slopes with ski butler service
In the morning, the Piste Butler rides her snowmobile around Turracher Höhe and treats guests right on the slopes to little gifts. These include drinks or small goodies—in our case, a Buff scarf and Piste Butler sparkling wine from the TrippelGUT winery.
Offers like these make the ski resort feel noticeably more personal. The service feels direct and approachable, not anonymous like in many large ski resorts.
Snowmobiling on the Turracher Höhe
A special highlight on the Turracher Höhe is guided snowmobiling (Skidoo)—an experience rarely found in Austrian ski resorts. The tours start right at the Almschatz and lead along approximately 23 kilometers of groomed forest trails through the winter landscape.
After a brief safety briefing, you’ll drive the snowmobile yourself—no prior experience is necessary. Tours are always conducted in a group with a guide; helmets and equipment are provided on-site. Each snowmobile can accommodate one or two people.
The tour lasts about two hours and costs around €219 per snowmobile. Important: Bring warm clothing and reserve in advance. Snowmobiling is not organized directly by the ski resort, but by a separate provider:
Provider: Snowmobiling / SLED Tours GmbH (Almschatz)
A Stop at Turracher Höhe: Our Lunch Break at the SEEBACHALM
After an intense morning of skiing, it’s time for a break—right here at the Seebachalm. The Turracher Höhe offers a wide selection of huts, well-distributed throughout the ski area and accessible directly on skis.
Culinary-wise, the Turracher Höhe has plenty to offer: from traditional huts serving regional cuisine to more modern restaurants with an Alpine twist. Many establishments rely on local products, which really shows in the taste.
Classic dishes are simply a must at the huts: Carinthian cheese noodles, Kaiserschmarrn, and cheese spaetzle. Hearty, uncomplicated, and just the thing after a few hours on the slopes.
The Seebachalm impresses not only with its flavors but also with its location. It’s easily accessible by both ski and car—ideal for a relaxed stop, even if you’re not skiing that day.
And when skiing in the sunshine, this is a must: an Aperol on the terrace with a view of the snow-covered mountain landscape.
Guided snowshoe hike on the Turracher Höhe
Off-piste Butler Programs
A guided snowshoe hike is the perfect way to discover the Turracher Höhe off the slopes. Together with the Piste Butler, you’ll trek through the snow-covered winter landscape around the high moors, past the idyllic Hüttenplatzerl, including a short stop for some Swiss stone pine schnapps.
The Pistenbutler not only guides you along the route but also provides fascinating insights into the surroundings—from the unique landscape to Europe’s largest contiguous Swiss stone pine forest. Things you often don’t even notice while skiing.
The view toward Eisenhut, the region’s highest peak, is particularly impressive. And all of this in a completely relaxed manner, without much effort, but rather as a leisurely winter tour.
Winter hiking on the Turracher Höhe is a great option for anyone who wants to do more than just ski on vacation. Families, couples, and groups of friends in particular will find it a wonderful complement to their time on the slopes. While skiing focuses on movement and excitement, winter hiking brings a sense of calm to the day. That’s exactly why the combination of skiing and winter hiking on the Turracher Höhe works so well.
Behind the Scenes: So Much Goes Into a Perfect Day on the Slopes
A real highlight for me was the “Behind the Scenes” tour. When you’re out and about in a ski resort, you usually only see the end result: perfectly groomed slopes, running lifts, and safe operations. As a guest, you usually don’t get to see what goes on behind the scenes. We learned a lot about slope grooming, mountain railways, and the technology behind them. For example, there are around 130 snow cannons and lances on the Turracher Höhe, and the reservoir holds about 80,000 cubic meters of water. Also super interesting: artificial snow works especially well at temperatures between about minus 6 and minus 8 degrees.
The view of the night work was particularly impressive: snow groomers weighing up to 15 tons are in operation for hours on end, often past midnight. Afterward, a freshly groomed slope looks even more impressive in the morning.
The season at Turrach usually runs from mid-November to mid-April, depending on the weather. Snow is guaranteed thanks to modern snowmaking systems.
As soon as the lifts close, the work begins: Several snowcats are in operation until after midnight, grooming the slopes for the next day. The machines weigh up to 15 tons, some of them equipped with winches, and cover many kilometers every night. This process consumes a significant amount of energy—including up to 1,800 liters of diesel.
There’s much more to a day of skiing than meets the eye: snowmaking with expensive snow cannons, large reservoirs, modern lift systems, and meticulous grooming every night. Add to that the staff, maintenance, and infrastructure needed to accommodate thousands of guests each day. All of this ensures that the operation runs smoothly and explains why a ski pass comes at a price.
Wellness on a Ski Vacation: A Hot Tub Instead of the Hustle and Bustle
After an active winter day, the Naturchalets Turracher Höhe by ALPS RESORTS on the Turracher Höhe the perfect retreat.
The chalets impress with plenty of space, a cozy atmosphere, and above all private wellness: your own sauna, whirlpool, and enough room to truly unwind. That’s exactly what makes the difference after a day in the snow—not just a quick break, but a conscious chance to unwind.
Whether with friends or family: The combination of activities and a private wellness area creates the ideal balance and lets you end the day in relaxation.
Torchlight hike instead of après-ski
Evening around Lake Turracher See
For those who don’t want to end the day in the traditional way, the Turracher Höhe offers a special alternative: an evening torchlight hike around Lake Turracher See.
At dusk, a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere emerges—perfect for immersing yourself once more in the winter landscape. The route is suitable for everyone, whether with friends or as a family. Good to know: The “torches” are equipped with string lights, making them completely safe for children.
Afterward, back to the chalet—exactly the kind of evening where you realize just how perfect the day was. And yes—when it comes to dinner, you’ll likely end up with simple recipes for the vacation home rather than elaborate evening plans.
My conclusion: Is the Piste Butler at Turracher Höhe really that special?
Yes—but not because anything here is artificially embellished, but because the idea simply fits well into the overall picture. Turracher Höhe doesn’t even try to be the loudest or largest ski resort. Instead, it focuses on experience, personality, and this blend of activity and moments of relaxation.
You’re at an altitude of over 1,800 meters here, right between Carinthia and Styria. Wide slopes, plenty of sunshine in late winter, and that special high-plateau feeling make all the difference. Especially in March, it’s a truly fantastic mix: perfect conditions on the slopes in the morning, sunshine at the hut later on, and perhaps a snowshoe hike or an activity with the Piste Butler in between. The winter Butler Program takes you beyond the classic ski day and into experiences you won’t find just anywhere.
And honestly: That’s exactly why I was there. Not just for skiing, but for a winter vacation on the Turracher Höhe that feels full of variety—and where there’s simply more going on than just the lift, the run, and lunch.
