Winter Holidays on the Turracher Höhe
At 1800 meters above sea level on a pass between Styria and Carinthia, the Turracher Höhe is one of the snowiest regions in Austria and offers snowy enjoyment from November until the beginning of May. However, winter dreams don’t only come true on the perfectly groomed 42 kilometers of pistes. Away from the ski slopes, too, amid picturesque pine forests, a diverse winter paradise awaits, with your chosen ALPS RESORT the perfect base from which to explore.
Skiing Enjoyment in the 3 Corners Region
The Turracher Höhe ski area (1400 - 2205 m) is an insider tip amongst the numerous ski resorts in the 3 Corners Region of Styria-Carinthia-Salzburg. 42 km of snowy pistes in combination with 14 modern gondolas and ski lifts set the pulses of skiers and snowboarders racing in anticipation. Absolute highlights include the 1.5 km long “Snowpark Turracher Höhe” as well as the “XXL Funslope”, one of the longest fun slopes in the world. If you prefer a circuit, we suggest giving the 12 km long “Turracher Höhe Seenrunde” a try, also treating you to a fantastic overview of the ski area. One extraordinary highlight is the so-called “Lake Taxi”, that provides a connection across the frozen waters of the Turracher See.
Cross-Country Skiing & Ice Skating on the Styria-Carinthia Border
Aside from a total of 25 km of marked winter hiking paths leading through snow-blanketed pine forests or alongside the three alpine tarns – the Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee – the Turracher Höhe is also famous as a cross-country Eldorado. You have four different trails (for skating as well as classic technique) totaling around 16 km to choose from. On one course that is barely two kilometers long, for example, you will actually complete a lap on the frozen Turracher See, whilst on the longest trail (seven kilometers), you will discover an absolutely pristine valley known as Weitental. The Turracher See also features a small-yet-charming, approximately 850 m² natural ice rink.
Highlights for Your Family Holiday
Thanks to the compactness of the ski area and the broad pistes, the Turracher Höhe is ideal for a family ski holiday. Especially for the youngsters, right next to the practice lift there is a delightful kids’ slope known as “Nocky’s WinterZeit”. Meanwhile, the older teens and adults will have a great sporting time with “Funcross”. And if that still isn’t enough excitement for you, then we would suggest you try, on the Carinthian side of the ski area, the “Nocky Flitzer” alpine slide, also open in winter, hurtling from the mountain station of the Panoramabahn down a 1.6 km track to the valley below.
Summer Holidays on the Turracher Höhe
The Turracher Höhe lies in the Nockberge mountains, on a roughly 1800 meters-high alpine pass between the Austrian provinces of Styria and Carinthia. This holiday region, which encompasses three picturesque mountain lakes (Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee), is home to the biggest uninterrupted expanse of pine forest, not only in Austria, but all of Europe. Villach, the closest biggish city with over 60,000 residents, is around 60 km away. Thanks to the unique natural setting and the many-and-varied holiday opportunities, the Turracher Höhe is an ideal destination for summer escapes in the heart of the Austrian Alps.
Hiking
The Turracher Höhe is a veritable hiking paradise, greeting you with leisurely hiking paths along with challenging alpine tours – for example, to the summit of the 2441 m high Eisenhut. The Kornockbahn carries you up to an elevation of some 2200 m, from where you will have no problems at all making the rest of the way to the top of the 2334 m Rinsennock. Set out on your next hike and roam through tranquil forests of Swiss pine. One particular highlight is the mountain walk along the idyllic 3 Lakes Path, which can be as short as 30 minutes or extended for as much as two hours. And thanks to interactive “Stations of the Senses” along the way, it also comes highly recommended for families. If you are surefooted and have a good head for heights, you might wish to put your skills to the test on the newly constructed “Hoher Steg”, a 400 meters-long fixed-cable climb with a difficulty rating of A to C.
Mountain Biking
This holiday region promises biking enjoyment for young and old. The new “Turracher Höhe Trail Area”, for example, is targeted specifically at families. Opportunities here include the 5 km long, ultra-natural “Kornock Flowtrail”, which winds its way for 350 vertical meters, accompanied by magnificent views of the Turracher See, down to the valley. There are also numerous practice areas and technique trails, where newbie bikers assisted by guides can prepare themselves perfectly for the flowtrail. E-bike fans can also look forward to clearly signposted tours leading through forests and alpine pastures.
Family Holidays on the Turrach
With its broad palette of recreational activities, the Turracher Höhe offers ideal conditions for a successful family summer holiday in the mountains. The most outstanding attractions lie right next to the Panoramabahn. Greeting you next to the mountain station at 2000 m above sea level is “Nocky’s AlmZeit”, a footpath with seven exciting play stations along the way. After refreshments and a bite to eat at the AlmZeit Hut, your adventure continues with a ride on the legendary “Nocky Flitzer”, an alpine slide that takes you on a winding thrill ride along a 1.6 km track down to the Turracher Höhe. Meanwhile, at “mythos edelstein”, kids up to 14 years of age can dig for precious stones and gold nuggets.
Our excursion tips
Landskron Castle Ruins
Burg Landskron, with its Eagle Arena and Ape Mountain, is a marvelous excursion destination for the whole family. The toll road up to the ruins is an easy drive (Ossiacher Süduferstraße, Schlossbergweg In the Eagle Arena, I am always impressed by the acrobatics of the “kings of the air”. This 40-minute show with eagles and falcons is absolutely memorable. No less fascinating is Ape Mountain, home to approximately 160 Japanese macaques. If you would like to take a closer look “behind the scenes”, we suggest booking a private tour with an experienced animal keeper or primatologist.
Burg Landskron is also the starting point for the popular, kid-friendly “Lord of the Castle Tour”. Taking approximately one and a half hours, it leads from the castle pond to the “Jungfernstieg” and the “White Wall”. Also be sure to set aside some time for a refreshment break and to enjoy the views!
Klagenfurt & Villach
If all the rest and relaxation should ever become “too much” for you, I recommend making a trip into the city. Klagenfurt and Villach are both only a 60-minute drive from here. Klagenfurt isn’t only the biggest city in Carinthia, it is also the provincial capital. No wonder, then, that the shopping opportunities are many and varied, while the downtown area represents a marvelous opportunity for a leisurely stroll. Furthermore, the west of Klagenfurt stands on famous Lake Wörthersee, where you will discover a beautiful 40,000 m² swimming area with 3 swim docks and a 300 m-long sandy beach.
Villach exudes Mediterranean flair. Hardly surprising, since this city lies close to the Italian border. This city of 60,000 residents can easily be explored on foot and, if you ever wish to take a break in between, you will be able to relax completely as you indulge yourself in a delicious Italian gelato somewhere along the picturesque Drau Promenade.
Carinthian Lakes
In Carinthia on the sunny side of the Alps, you will discover some of the most beautiful and warmest lakes in the entire Alpine region, Lake Wörthersee, with its turquoise-blue tones and almost Caribbean flair, at the head of the pack. From Alpenpark Turracher Höhe to cosmopolitan Velden on the western bay, the total distance is only 60 km. Standing above Wörthersee is yet another top Carinthian excursion destination, the Pyramidenkogel – which, at 100 m, boasts the highest wooden lookout tower in the world. The panoramas from up there are absolutely sensational.
The second-biggest lake and also one of the warmest lakes in Carinthia, Millstätter See, is roughly 40 minutes away by car. While Ossiacher See and Faaker See are likewise less than an hour from here.
Spa Enjoyment
If you leave the Turracher Höhe heading south, in roughly 20 minutes you will find yourself in Bad Kleinkirchheim. There, in the heart of the Carinthian Nockberge, two spa resorts invite you to escape the outside world completely. At Thermal Römerbad, you are greeted by an incomparable array of wellness opportunities including a sauna center on 3 floors and spanning 12,000 m². Therme St. Kathrein, on the other hand, boasts the biggest water area of all Carinthian spa resorts as well as an 86 m-long slide guaranteed to appeal to families especially. Because it is so close, a trip to Bad Kleinkirchheim is also convenient even after a day full of mountain adventures.
Tip 5: Murau – the “beer town”
But you don’t only find spectacular excursion destinations south of the Turracher Höhe. Upper Styria also has a lot to offer, too. With its medieval charm, the historic downtown area of Murau invites you to take an extended walk, to imposing Schloss Murau, for example, enthroned majestically above the town with a history that goes back to the year 1250. In 2010, Murau was also honored as a “beer town”. You simply have to taste the delicious Murauer Bier, while a guided brewery tour will reveal all the secrets behind this delectable beverage.
There is yet another attraction you simply have to see during your excursion to Murtal in Styria: the Wood Museum in St. Ruprecht ob Murau, a fascinating world of wood spanning 10,000 m². It is amazing to see all the things that can be made out of wood.

Feedback from our guests
The chalet ( Naturchalet Nr.19) was amazing, very nice furniture all around the house, we spent a lot of time in the hot tub and sauna, which made our trip so much better, well equipped kitchen and super comfortable common room, bathrooms. I would recommend this chalet to my friends and family.
My friends and stayed in chalet #20 during our winter vacation and absolutely loved it! From the spacious bedrooms of which all with ensuite bathrooms, to the sauna & hot tub area and the huge living room with a very modern and luxurious kitchen. We were blown away by the vicinity to the slopes and the fact that you can reach the chalet from the slopes in skis. We've already booked our next stay in this chalet and can't wait to be back at this amazing place.
For our annual ski trip with my family we chose to switch it up and not go to our usual hotel. Did not regret it at all. Very nice chalets with all amenities one can wish for in perfect location. We stayed in the chalet #20 and loved it very much. Highly recommend.
I had the pleasure to stay in the chalet n.20 for 4 nights. The chalet is modern with all the possible amenities but maintains the classic mountain chalet cozyness. It also has a Sauna and a whirlpool that makes it unique, plus an outstanding view from a huge balcony. To note that the chalet is surrounded by the woods where we could see some deers!
Fantastic house with amazing views of the mountings. It’s a great house to retreat to as there is an luxurious hot tub outside on the balcony with great views and a wellness area. I will definitely go again (I’ve been 3 times now:)). The skiing is also really great with luxury lifts and super for families as well as groups of friends. In summer the are loads of great mountainbike trails to walk or run (being a runner and mountainbiker myself it’s really awesome and with great vistas!) compared to the wellness hotels in the area these luxury villas are amazing value for money.
