The Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region is located in the Salzburg region and is synonymous with alpine nature holidays in the largest protected area in the Alps, the Hohe Tauern National Park. Austria's oldest and largest national park is located in Salzburg, Tyrol and Carinthia and covers around 1,856 km². During your holiday in the Hohe Tauern National Park, you will experience glaciers, three-thousand-metre peaks, waterfalls, alpine pastures and one of the most species-rich regions in Austria.
The Hohe Tauern National Park was established in the 1980s and has since protected a unique natural environment with over 300 three-thousand-metre peaks, including the Großglockner. Visitors can expect a wide range of nature experiences: hiking, mountaineering, wildlife observation with rangers, themed trails, visitor centres and family-friendly excursion destinations. What makes it special is the combination of protected, unspoilt nature and well-developed infrastructure. No mass tourism, but space, tranquillity and genuine mountain experiences – that's what makes the Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region so special.
These municipalities in the Salzburg region are part of the Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region: Krimml, Mittersill, Uttendorf, Rauris, Taxenbach, Bramberg, Neukirchen am Großvenediger, Niedernsill, Piesendorf, Hollersbach, Stuhlfelden, Wald-Königsleiten, Kaprun, Bruck and Fusch an der Glocknerstraße, Embach, Bad Gastein, Großarl and Hüttschlag.
The Big Five of the Hohe Tauern National Park are marmots, golden eagles, bearded vultures, ibex and chamois. In addition, more than half of all mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles found in Austria can be discovered in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Rauriser Krumltal valley, for example, is the area with the highest density of golden eagles in Austria, while marmots and, with a bit of luck, ibex can be observed in the area around the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
During your holiday in the Hohe Tauern National Park, you will experience unspoilt nature, alpine panoramas, interactive national park centres, wildlife – and some of Austria's most popular excursion destinations.
The High Alpine Road offers 48 km of alpine panoramic views, numerous photo spots and exhibitions between Fusch in the Salzburg region and Heiligenblut in Carinthia.
With a total height of 380 metres over three stages, the Krimml Waterfalls are the highest waterfalls in Europe.
A trained ranger will accompany you to the most beautiful corners of the national park and explain the fauna, flora and history of your holiday region. Tours are offered in both summer and winter.
The excellent nature trail through the unspoilt, centuries-old forest in Kolm Saigurn is also suitable for families with children in summer and snowshoes in winter.
In the Rauris Kruml Valley, you have a good chance of spotting bearded vultures, griffon vultures, eagles, chamois or marmots in the wild. The reintroduction of the extinct bearded vulture began in 1986.
The mountain railway takes you up to 2,300 metres above sea level: in summer, there is a hiking area, mountain lakes and via ferrata routes, and in winter, a clearly laid out, family-friendly ski area.
Families will find numerous child-friendly activities in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Easy themed hiking trails, wildlife watching and guided tours with rangers bring nature to life. There are also summer toboggan runs, mountain railways and playgrounds in alpine surroundings. In winter, gentle slopes, toboggan runs and snowshoe hikes ensure fun in the snow. Discover nature, get active and experience adventure: the Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region offers the perfect conditions for this.
Skiing is also the number one winter sport in the Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region. Eight ski resorts offer a total of over 870 kilometres of slopes for all levels, from family slopes to challenging descents. Particularly popular are KitzSki with its direct connection to Kitzbühel, Wildkogel for long panoramic runs, the Weißsee Uttendorf glacier world for enjoyable days of skiing and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area. Modern lifts, guaranteed snow and family-friendly infrastructure round off the offer.
Winter in the Hohe Tauern National Park has much more to offer than just eight ski resorts: cross-country skiing trails, toboggan runs, winter hiking trails, snowshoe trails and peaceful nature experiences away from the slopes.
The world's longest illuminated toboggan run, at 14 km, is located in Bramberg am Wildkogel. Other toboggan runs: Alpengasthof Liebenberg Uttendorf, Kreuzboden Rauris
Step by step, you can explore the tranquillity of winter and the Hohe Tauern National Park on snowshoe trails and guided snowshoe hikes.
The Wasenmoos high moor trail in Mittersill, around the Uttendorf bathing lake or on the Pinzga trail (200 km) are highlights for cross-country skiers.
