The Lammertal is a picturesque valley in Salzburg's Tennengau region, nestled between the Tennengebirge, Dachstein, Bischofsmütze and Gosaukamm mountains. The 30 km long valley is best known for its unspoilt nature – there is even a primeval forest here! – its hiking trails and numerous alpine huts. The region is named after the Lammer: the river runs through the Lammertal valley and offers ideal conditions for canyoning, rafting and kayaking. In winter, the Dachstein West ski area scores with wide slopes, clear visibility and the best conditions for families and leisure skiers.
The region south of Salzburg impresses with its tranquillity, natural beauty, down-to-earth attitude and gentle tourism. Unspoilt villages, living traditions and plenty of space to breathe deeply characterise your break in the Lammertal valley.
If you want to combine nature with culture on your holiday, this is the place for you: the Mozart city of Salzburg is around 60 kilometres away, and Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful towns in Austria, is around 40 kilometres away.
From Germany/western Austria: Take the A10 Tauern motorway, exit at Golling/Abtenau or Werfen. Continue into the valley on well-maintained federal roads. From the city of Salzburg: approx. 60 km, approx. 1 hour via the B159 towards Abtenau. Please remember to bring snow chains in winter.
Bischofshofen or Golling-Abtenau railway station. Continue with regional Postbuses to the Lammertal valley (e.g. to Abtenau, Annaberg-Lungötz, Rußbach). Tip: With the Guest Mobility Ticket, you can use public transport throughout the province of Salzburg free of charge.

Scheffau, at the entrance to the Lammer Valley, fascinates visitors with its narrow rock gorges and the unbridled power of the water in the Lammerklamm gorge. Walking time: approx. 30–60 minutes.
In the primeval forest of St. Martin, you will discover impressive giant trees, including a 300-year-old, 48-metre-high fir tree – the "guardian of the primeval forest". Walking time: 1–2 hours
The 28.5 km long panoramic road connects Abtenau in the Lammertal valley and the Salzkammergut – with magnificent views of the Dachstein and Bischofsmütze mountains. The Postalm is Austria's largest contiguous alpine pasture area.
Getreidegasse, Hohensalzburg Castle, Hellbrunn Palace with its water features and zoo, Mozart's birthplace and Mirabell Palace: the city of Salzburg is worth a visit, even when it rains.
The largest ice cave in the world is located in Werfen. You can visit it from May to October as part of a 75-minute guided tour.
The Lammer Valley is ideal for a holiday with your dog. It offers numerous dog-friendly excursion destinations, in particular hiking trails and nature experiences such as the Lammer Valley primeval forest, the Lammer Gorge, a ride on the Donnerkogelbahn cable car or refreshments by the Lammer river. Dogs are also allowed in the Eisriesenwelt ice caves. Please inform yourself about (and observe) the applicable leash and/or muzzle requirements.

Yes, Dachstein West also offers good opportunities for advanced skiers. Although many slopes are wide and family-friendly, there are also more challenging runs, steeper slopes and ski touring routes that require technical skill. The area is therefore also attractive for freeriders and experienced skiers.
In summer, the Lammer Valley welcomes you with natural highlights such as the Lammer Gorge, the Lammer Valley Primeval Forest and the Postalm. On around 300 km of marked hiking trails, nature trails, family-friendly tours and numerous bike tours, you will discover mountain huts, springs and a variety of recreational areas.
Mountain railways, adventure worlds and natural pools provide exercise, refreshment and fun. The options range from leisurely to action-packed. In summer, the Lammertal valley offers a variety of excursion destinations for families and active holidaymakers.

The highlight of the Lammertal valley: the annual HeuART Festival, featuring the world's largest hay figure parade, takes place at the beginning of September, alternating between Annaberg-Lungötz, St. Martin, Abtenau and Russbach. For weeks, local clubs work by hand to create impressive works of art from fragrant hay. These can then be admired along the Hay Figure Trail.
