A holiday in the Montafon offers authentic mountain experiences away from the crowds. Nestled between the Rätikon, Silvretta and Verwall ranges, this region is perfect for active nature lovers who appreciate peace and quiet, wide open spaces and unspoilt landscapes. Instead of overcrowded tourist hotspots, you’ll find crisp mountain air, authentic villages and a wide range of opportunities for active getaways.

The valley, around 40 km long, stretches from Bludenz to the Silvretta High Alpine Road and connects towns such as Schruns, Tschagguns, Gaschurn and Gargellen. The short distances within the valley, modern mountain railways and a wide range of activities make a holiday in the Montafon particularly flexible – whether in summer or winter.

What is the best way to get to the Montafon?

You can easily reach the Montafon via Bludenz in Vorarlberg. By car, take the A14 Rheintal motorway to Bludenz and from there follow the well-maintained Montafonerstraße into the valley. By train, travel to Bludenz and change there onto the Montafonerbahn, which will take you directly to Schruns.

Which is the highest mountain in the Montafon?

At 3,312 m, Piz Buin is the highest mountain in the region and a popular destination for experienced mountaineers. Other notable peaks include: Silvrettahorn (3,244 m), Dreiländerspitze (3,197 m), Großer Litzner (3,109 m) and Vermuntkopf (2,851 m).

The Montafon combines active days on the slopes with peaceful experiences of nature away from the crowds. You can look forward to 227 km of slopes, 90 km of cross-country trails, 290 km of groomed winter hiking trails and several toboggan runs – from challenging runs in the Silvretta Montafon to peaceful winter moments in Gargellen or on the Kristberg. Particularly ambitious skiers appreciate the Silvretta Montafon ski area with its long, challenging slopes and highlights such as the Hochjoch Totale (the ‘King’s Run’ in the Montafon), whilst families and leisure skiers can also find quieter alternatives in the valley.

A total of 5 ski resorts and 58 cable cars and lifts ensure a varied skiing experience in Vorarlberg. Despite its modern infrastructure, the Montafon remains pleasantly laid-back – offering the best skiing experience away from the major tourist hotspots.

Which resorts are part of the Silvretta Montafon ski area?

The ski resort links Schruns with Tschagguns, St. Gallenkirch and Gaschurn. Schruns lies at an altitude of 690 m above sea level and is regarded as the main town of the Montafon region.

In summer, the Montafon reveals itself as a vast and unspoilt landscape: over 1,100 km of hiking trails, around 260 km of cycle routes and several mountain railways offer plenty of scope for active days out. The options range from easy walks to alpine tours in the Silvretta. Natural spots such as Lake Lünersee, quiet side valleys and crisp mountain air define the experience.

Hiking in the Montafon

Well-signposted trails, plenty of starting points and several mountain railways make the Montafon a particularly flexible destination for hiking. From short walks to alpine hikes, you can plan your break exactly as it suits you.

Lünersee Circular Walk

A panoramic circular walk at an altitude of around 2,000 m, offering views of the turquoise-blue Lake Lünersee and the striking peaks of the Rätikon.

Cycling with a view

The Montafon is one of Vorarlberg’s most diverse cycling regions. Around 260 km of cycle routes wind through the valley and up into the mountains. From leisurely rides along the River Ill to challenging climbs towards the Silvretta, you’ll find plenty of options for both challenging and relaxing rides.

When you arrive at our Montafon Suites Schruns, you will receive the Montafon Guest Card at reception. It is included in your stay all year round and entitles you, amongst other things, to use public transport and enjoy discounts on mountain railways and leisure activities.

Cuisine on a holiday in the Montafon

The cuisine of the Montafon is down-to-earth and characterised by regional ingredients. Typical dishes include cheese spaetzle and the spicy Sura Kees, a traditional Montafon speciality. Riebl, a simple semolina dish, is also a regional speciality and is often served with apple sauce.
