The Wilder Kaiser towers over the southern part of the Kaisergebirge Nature Reserve, situated between St. Johann in Tirol and Kufstein and 110 km from Munich. Its striking rocky peak and the gentler slopes of the northern Kitzbühel Alps characterise this holiday region, which comprises the four villages of Söll, Scheffau, Ellmau and Going.  

The Wilde Kaiser in Tyrol is a popular year-round destination. In winter, the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental offers 275 kilometres of slopes. In summer, hiking and climbing routes, as well as a wide range of cycling options, ensure plenty of variety.

The region is part of the largest e-bike region in the Kitzbühel Alps-Kaisergebirge area and is known far beyond its borders as the filming location for ‘Der Bergdoktor ’.

Perched on a 90-metre-high cliff overlooking the River Inn, the fortress is the symbol of Kufstein. Easily accessible via the panoramic funicular, it is home to the Fortress and Local History Museum, as well as special exhibitions and cultural events.

Hohe Salve Hopfgarten

Summer in the Wilder Kaiser

On one side lies the striking rocky peak of the Wilder Kaiser, and on the other the gentle hills of the northern Kitzbühel Alps, which can be easily reached via the region’s summer mountain railways. The Wilder Kaiser region in Tyrol offers a wide variety of hikes, via ferratas, climbing routes and trail running trails, as well as sections of the Adlerweg and Jakobsweg routes. For cyclists, there are 350 km of cycle, mountain bike and gravel bike trails, the 80 km-long Kaiserradrunde circuit and access to the world’s largest e-bike region, the Kitzbühel Alps–Kaisergebirge.

In summer, the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental summer mountain railways provide access to seven mountain adventure parks, which are particularly popular with families. At the same time, the gondolas offer a convenient starting point for numerous hikes and save walkers the initial climb.

Bergdoktor Tours

Fans of the TV series Der Bergdoktor can discover numerous original filming locations in the Wilder Kaiser region – either on guided tours with background information or on their own, by foot or on an e-bike. The best chance to catch a glimpse of the series’ stars in person is at the ‘Fantage’ events and the Bergdoktor Mountain Festival.

Highlights include the Gruberhof on the Söller Bromberg, Dr Martin Gruber’s Bergdoktor practice in Ellmau, Lake Hinterstein in Scheffau and the village square in Going. The Gruberhof is easily accessible via a bookable tractor ride.
