Meal Prep for Your Holiday Home
Prepare dumplings, pack them up & enjoy them on vacation
Meal prep for your holiday apartment is the easiest way to eat delicious, healthy, and stress-free meals on vacation. If you’re spending your vacation in a place with a self-catering kitchen, a little prep at home can save you a lot of time on-site. Instead of spending hours shopping or cooking, having pre-prepared meals for your vacation means you’ll have a complete meal ready to go right away. Especially popular: dumplings as a meal prep dish. They’re simple, filling, and perfect for taking along. Ideal if you want to combine great taste with minimal effort on your vacation.
The Benefits of Meal Prep for Your Holiday Apartment
Why Meal Prep Is Really Worth It for Your Vacation
A vacation in a holiday home means freedom - especially when it comes to meals. But to be honest: At first, I was skeptical about how a vacation without full-service and served meals would work for us as a family (and for me as the usual head chef). Once I’m on vacation, I don’t want to have to think too much, go shopping, or spend a lot of time cooking. That’s why I skip all that. How?
I prepare 1 to 3 meals at home, pack them in glass containers, cooler bags, and a folding box, and have ready-to-eat food on hand as soon as I arrive. That takes care of the first few meals in the self-catering kitchen. With meal prep, you consciously put in the effort upfront and “buy” yourself time on vacation. Little effort, no arguments, no improvising.
- Stress-free arrival: Meals are fully prepared; no frantic shopping or improvising is necessary.
- Save time: Cook once, enjoy many times - ideal for families, groups, or workations.
- Minimal effort on-site: All you need for preparation is a pot, water, and a stove - no messy kitchen chaos.
- Delicious food just like at home: Fresh ingredients, favorite recipes, and high-quality meals that kids, friends, and colleagues will love. The dishes can be adapted to different needs (e.g., food intolerances).
- Cost savings: Fewer spontaneous purchases and restaurant visits are needed while you’re there, which saves money.
Why are dumplings the perfect meal prep for vacation?
My go-to meal prep for vacation is dumplings. Cheese dumplings have become a staple in my luggage, whether for a family vacation, a workation with colleagues, or a weekend trip with friends. In general, dumplings work perfectly as quick vacation meals, because they’re ideally suited to the conditions of a self-catering vacation in a vacation rental:
- Dumplings can be fully prepared in advance.
- They’re easy to transport (chilled or frozen) and
- require only a pot once you’re there.
- Dumplings are filling, serve several people—and are always a hit at home and on vacation.
- When I get into “dumpling production” mode again, I’ve prepared 3 to 4 meals in one go.
Step-by-Step Guide: Preparing Dumplings for Meal Prep
Here’s how to do it:
- Prepare the dumpling dough (depending on the recipe)
- Shape the dumplings
- Decide: freeze raw or par-cook
- Portion out (2–3 pieces per person)
- Pack in airtight containers and label
- Practical tip: Freezing them flat saves space and allows them to thaw faster.
Freezing raw or pre-cooked – which is better?
This is one of the most important decisions in meal prep.
Freeze raw
- Better consistency after cooking
- Ideal for classic dumplings (such as Tyrolean dumplings)
- Longer cooking time when ready to eat
- Freeze the raw dumplings individually (e.g., on a board) so they don’t stick together.
Freezing pre-cooked
- ready faster at the vacation rental
- minimal loss of quality
Conclusion: If you want maximum quality → freeze raw. If you (like me) want maximum simplicity → pre-cooked.
Transport: How to ensure your dumplings arrive safely
- For a short trip, a cooler bag is sufficient (keeps for 2–3 days).
- For longer trips, frozen dumplings and ice packs are recommended.
- Once you arrive, put the dumplings directly in the refrigerator or freezer.
Important: Avoid “partially thawing and refreezing.” This affects quality and shelf life.
Preparation in the holiday apartment
Minimal effort, maximum flavor thanks to meal prep. At ALPS RESORTS , the kitchens are fully equipped. For the prepared dumplings, however, all you need is:
- a pot
- water (with soup seasoning if desired)
- a stove.
Here’s how it works: Bring the water or soup to a boil, reduce the heat, add the dumplings, and let them cook or simmer. Done!
Cooking time:
- fresh: approx. 15 minutes
- frozen: 20–25 minutes
Perfect as a quick meal in a vacation rental. No messy kitchen cleanup and on the table in just a few minutes.
What goes well with dumplings? (with minimal effort)
It doesn’t take much to elevate store-bought dumplings:
- Butter + Parmesan for spinach dumplings
- Quick green salad
- Soup (e.g., clear broth) for cheese dumplings and Tyrolean dumplings
- Ready-made sauces like tomato sauce for homemade spinach dumplings
A minimal extra effort that yields a significantly better result.
3 Dumplings for Your Vacation in a Holiday Home
Common Meal Prep Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
- Portions that are too large
→ Make smaller portions instead; this gives you more flexibility when you’re on the go - Poor packaging
→ Avoid freezer burn: pack airtight - Not labeling anything
→ After 2 days, no one knows what’s what anymore - Insufficient cooling during transport
→ Take the cold chain seriously, especially in summer - Planning too much at once
→ 1–3 prepared meals are enough

Meal prep for a holiday home works best when it’s kept simple. Dumplings are one of the best solutions for this. Prepare them at home, pack them up, and just toss them in a pot when you arrive. That way, you won’t have to worry about your first few meals on vacation. For the rest, I recommend our “quick, easy meals for vacation rentals”.
