Kreischberg in Summer: A Trip on the Summer Cable Car

Hiking, Family Activities, and Plenty to Do at 1,800 Meters

Many people know the Kreischberg primarily as a ski resort. But even in summer, a trip to this World Championship mountain in the Murau region is well worth it. The Kreischberg 10-person gondola takes you comfortably up to about 1,800 meters above sea level. Whether it’s a short hike through the Swiss stone pine forest, the Dinowald, or the KreiSchi Safari with kids, disc golf, or mountain biking, there’s a surprising amount to experience around the mountain station.

We took a look at what the Kreischberg has to offer in the summer, which hikes are ideal for a day trip, and what you need to know about opening hours, prices, and the Murau GästeCard.

Up to 1,800 meters with the Kreischberg Summer Cable Car

The excursion starts at the valley station in St. Georgen am Kreischberg. From here, the 10-person gondola takes you comfortably up to about 1,800 meters. Instead of having to climb a lot of elevation right away, you can start your hike immediately upon reaching the top.

And there are several options for doing so. If you’d like to take it easy, stick to the flatter alpine meadows and trails through the Swiss stone pine forest. If you’d like to gain more elevation, you can continue hiking toward the Kreischberg summit at 1,997 meters.

Kreischberg Summer Cable Car 2026 Opening Hours and Prices

The Kreischberg summer cable car will not be open daily in the summer of 2026.

Hiking on the Kreischberg: Which Trail Is Right for You?

Whether it’s a short loop with the kids or a longer hike, at Kreischberg you can easily tailor your day to your fitness level and the time you have available. It’s especially convenient that several trails start right at the mountain station.

For a leisurely start, the Speichersee Loop, which is 1.4 kilometers long, is a great option. Families can choose the 1.6-kilometer-long Dinowald Loop, which is also stroller-friendly.

If you’d like to be out and about a bit longer, take the Kreischberg Adventure Hike. The 4.1-kilometer route leads from the mountain station via the Moorblick to the KreiSchi Ghost Train and KreiSchi Safari, then back to the mountain station.

The Kreischberg Loop offers an even longer route at 8 kilometers. Among other stops, it leads past the Esebeck Hut to the Kreischberg summit and the KreiSchi Safari.

💡 Our tip: For a varied first visit, we’d recommend the Kreischberg Adventure Hike. At 4.1 kilometers, it can easily be combined with the adventure stations and a stop for refreshments, so your day isn’t just about hiking.

Dinowald, KreiSchi Safari, and Ghost Train

From the mountain station, it’s just a short walk to the Dinowald. Mighty prehistoric giants await among the trees, turning the hike into a little adventure. The Dinowald loop trail is 1.6 kilometers long and stroller-friendly.

The adventure continues with the KreiSchi Safari. Along the way, you’ll encounter lions, elephants, giraffes, and more. You’ll need to be a little braver for the KreiSchi Ghost Train. It’s located at the summit of the Kreischberg, and its figures are sure to give you goosebumps.

This way, kids keep finding new destinations along the way, and the hike quickly turns into a shared mountain adventure.

Try Disc Golf in the Zirbenwald Forest

After hiking and dinosaurs, it’s time for something else. At 1,800 meters, you’ll find the Kreischberg Disc Golf Park with nine holes in the Swiss stone pine forest. There’s also a five-hole introductory course.

The concept is easy to explain: Instead of putting a golf ball into a hole, you try to get a Frisbee into a basket with as few throws as possible.

With a valid lift ticket, use of the course is free. This makes it easy to fit disc golf into a day at Kreischberg.

Mountain Biking on the Kreischberg

Those who prefer to get around on two wheels rather than on foot can also explore the Kreischberg. At the base station, you’ll find the pump track, Kreischi Bikeland, and the Kreischberg Trail Area.

Mountain bike trails also lead over the Ochsenberg and through St. Lorenzen up to the Kreischberg. If you want to save yourself some of the elevation gain, simply take your bike on the 10-person gondola and start further up. From the top station, for example, you can bike the final leg to the Kreischberg summit. Those who prefer downhill riding can take the gondola up and start their tour from the mountain.

Good to know: The “Monster Scooters” and “Mountain Carts” known from previous years will not be in operation in the summer of 2026.

Visit Kreischberg with the Murau GästeCard

If you’re vacationing in the Murau region, you should Murau Guest Card when planning your trip. It’s also valid for the Kreischberg Sommerbergbahn.

In addition to the mountain railway, the guest card offers other benefits at attractions in the region. This allows you to combine a day at Kreischberg with other activities around Murau.

💡 Our tip: Check the current benefits of the Murau GästeCard before your vacation and plan your day trips in advance. That way, you’ll get much more out of the card.

Even More to Experience Around the Kreischberg

Even away from the summer cable car, there’s plenty to experience around St. Georgen am Kreischberg. At the Schopfart 3D Archery Park, a course with around 30 lifelike 3D targets winds through the forest. Cyclists can explore the region on the Murradweg, while the 18-hole Murau-Kreischberg Golf Club offers a change of pace on the green. On hot days, the heated St. Georgen Outdoor Pool, complete with a children’s pool and playground, is well worth a visit. In case of bad weather, the Escape Rooms at Kreischberg offer an indoor alternative. And the nearby town of Murau is also a great destination for a day trip and a stroll through the historic old town.

What can you do at Kreischberg in the summer?

Can you take a stroller up the Kreischberg?

Yes. The Dinowald Loop Trail is stroller-friendly. On the additional 30-minute stroller path, construction traffic is expected in the summer of 2026 due to construction work.

Can I take my dog on the Kreischberg gondola?

Ja. Hunde können mit der Sommerbergbahn fahren. Die Berg und Talfahrt kostet 2026 € 5,00. Beim Wandern im Almgebiet sind Hunde an der Leine zu führen.

How much time should I set aside for a trip to the Kreischberg?

About half a day is enough for a gondola ride, a short hike, and a stop for refreshments. If you want to combine the Kreischberg adventure hike, DiscGolf, or several family attractions, it's worth planning a full day.

Is the Kreischberg only interesting for families?

No. In addition to family activities, there are hikes to the Kreischberg summit, disc golf, mountain bike trails, and bike transport via the gondola. This makes the Kreischberg ideal for couples, groups of friends, and active vacationers.

What attractions and activities are there around the Kreischberg?

There’s plenty to do around the Kreischberg, even away from the Sommerbergbahn. These include the Schopfart 3D Archery Park, Bike Kreischberg, the Murau-Kreischberg Golf Club, the St. Georgen Outdoor Pool, and the Escape Rooms at Kreischberg. A trip to the nearby town of Murau is also well worth it—perhaps for a stroll through the historic old town or as a nice change of pace after an active day on the mountain.
