Sunset rides, scenic tours, and bike & hike: our colleague Christina shares her three favorite e-bike tours in the Kitzbühel Alps.

Cycling in the Kitzbühel Alps – It’s so rewarding!
The Kitzbühel Alps are a true highlight for cyclists: more than 1,000 kilometers of marked cycling and biking trails wind their way through the breathtaking mountain landscapes between the Wilder Kaiser and the Kitzbüheler Horn. The region is perfect for mountain bikers, e-bikers, trail lovers, gravel riders – basically anyone who enjoys being active on two wheels. The four sub-regions
- Brixental
- Hohe Salve
- Johann in Tirol, and
- Pillerseetal
offer not just scenic variety but also a top-notch infrastructure. With clearly signposted routes, cable cars offering bike transport, e-bike charging stations, bike wash areas, and air pumps, you’ll find everything a cyclist could possibly wish for.
Whether you’re into high-adrenaline trails, laid-back e-bike rides with refreshment stops at mountain huts along the way, or combining biking with hiking, the Kitzbühel Alps always deliver.
And with numerous bike events like the EldoRADo Bike & Run Festival, you’ll have the chance to see how well you measure up against your fellow riders.
Right on Trend: Riding with E(xtra) Power
On foot or by bike – as long as it’s uphill! Christina spends a lot of time outdoors. Over five years ago, she got herself an e-bike: “For me, it was the perfect complement to hiking and via ferrata climbing. Now I love hopping on my e-bike after work for a bike & hike tour and to catch a beautiful sunset in the mountains. Or I head out when I’m hunting for mushrooms or bilberries – I also get back home quicker and don’t have to carry everything myself.” E-bikes have surged in popularity in recent years and are now part of Christina’s everyday life – for many good reasons:
- Experience more, huff and puff less
You can manage longer tours, tackle greater elevation gains, and reach new destinations – without wiping yourself out. - Suitable for all fitness levels
Want to start gently or push your limits right out of the starting gate? You set the pace, the motor adapts. - Rides in a group
When fitness and pace vary within a group, an e-bike helps compensate for those differences. - Training that's fun
Stay active without overexerting yourself: train gently and purposefully while enjoying the view as well. E-bikes are also ideal if you are returning to biking after an extended break.
- More variety during your holiday
An e-bike expands your range and lets you see more. - A sustainable form of transportation
Enjoy nature minus the noise or emissions – an e-bike gets you to the most beautiful spots in an eco-friendly way. - Perfect for alpine terrain
Steep climbs, gravel paths, long tours in the mountains – an e-bike helps you tackle even challenging routes.
Riding an e-bike makes things easier. But always keep your respect for challenging tours and the mountains in general. Never hit the trail without a basic first aid kit in your backpack – and never without a helmet on your head!
Christina’s Favorite E-Bike Tours in the Kitzbühel Alps
It seems like she knows every root and every rock in her home region. When she’s not summiting peaks in the Kitzbühel Alps or nearby Pinzgau, Christina is busy with sales management for ALPS RESORTS in the Kitzbühel Alps and the Tiroler Zugspitz Region. Here are three of her favorite e-bike tours in the Kitzbühel Alps:
Astberg Tour by E-Bike: Sundowner with View of the Kaiser
- Route: Reith bei Kitzbühel – Astberg – Ellmau – Going – Reith
- approx. 15 km * ca. 450 m elevation gain * difficulty: moderate
Christina’s favorite after-work ride starts at Dorfresort Kitzbühel, right by the church in Reith bei Kitzbühel. From the village center, just before the Hölzl carpentry workshop, the route follows the Astbergweg (a narrow road with gradients up to 12%) up to the Astbergsee at 1,175 meters above sea level. At her favorite scenic spot, you will have reached the highest point of the Astberg tour and stand eye-to-eye with the Wilder Kaiser, the Kitzbüheler Horn, and the Grosser Rettenstein. The Wilder Kaiser remains a constant companion on this tour, visible almost the entire way. Incidentally, the Astberg is also Going’s local ski area and, in winter, part of the absolutely vast SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental lift alliance.
“On the way back through Going, you can stop at the church square for ice cream at the kEISer ice cream parlor. Or, if you ride the tour in the morning, treat yourself to a full breakfast at Café beim Schuster. There’s also a guesthouse right on the church square that might look familiar to fans of the legendary Bergdoktor TV series; with other shooting locations you can also visit in Ellmau.”
E-Bike & Hike to the Spiessnägel: Ride and Roam
- Route: Kirchberg in Tirol – Spertental to Aschau – Kasplatzl – Hirzeggalm – Spiessnägel
- approx. 21 km + ca. 1,100 m elevation gain + moderate
Kirchberg in Tirol, located in the Brixental between Westendorf and Kitzbühel, is easy to reach from the ALPS RESORTS in Westendorf, Hopfgarten, Reith bei Kitzbühel, and Oberndorf. The Spertental valley stretches from Kirchberg to the border of Salzburg province. This protected landscape area in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps is a real delight to explore by e-bike: “From Kirchberg to Kasplatzl in the Spertental valley, following the Aschauer Ache stream almost the entire way – which makes this ride really pleasant even on hot summer days.”
The bike & hike tour to the Spiessnägel is a full-day outing covering roughly 20 km. “The route is long but never really steep. From the bike & hike station above the Hirzeggalm, you continue on foot. My personal highlight is the view at the Hirzegglacke – the Grosser Rettenstein reflects beautifully in the water there. This round trip to the Hirzegglacke isn’t particularly busy, and on a clear day, you are treated to fantastic views of the Hohe Tauern, including the Grossvenediger and the Grossglockner. From the Hirzeggalm (a hut where refreshments are available), you can gaze all the way across the Spertental to the Wilder Kaiser beyond. On the way back, I like to stop at the Kneipp water-therapy station in Aschau – it’s the perfect way to wake up tired legs.”
Rotwandalm: A Culinary E-Bike Tour in Westendorf
- Route: Westendorf – Windautal – Krumbach car park – Filzenscharte – Rotwandalm - Westendorf
- approx. 45 km + 1,000 m elevation gain + moderate
You can begin the e-bike tour to the Rotwandalm from any of the three ALPS RESORTS in Westendorf. From the Brixental Suites, the route is roughly 3 km longer. From the doorstep of Berg & Golf Resort, located right on the golf course, or from Chalet 104 and Chalet 149, you will follow the Brixental Cycle Path (Route 21) past the Waldhof Chapel, Landgasthof Lendwirt, and along the Windauer Ache into the Windautal valley.
“The number of alpine huts along the route inspired us to turn the Rotwandalm ride into a culinary tour. I love the fact that there are so many places in the Windautal where local hosts serve traditional dishes made from regional products. Whether it’s the delicious homemade cakes at the Gamskogelhütte and Käsealm Straubing, or what I consider the absolute best Tyrolean “grey cheese” around at the Rotwandalm – incidentally, that intensely flavored sour-milk cheese is a regional specialty. Meanwhile, Gasthaus Steinberg is also known for its gourmet cuisine and can even be reached by car.”
