Saving on Your Vacation: The right planning makes all the difference.

Smart planning lets you enjoy your time away without blowing your budget. A well-organized vacation means:

  • more time to unwind
  • less stress
  • not being overwhelmed by the vast selection of activity options at your destination
  • and having more money in your pocket for outings and experiences together.

Families, in particular, benefit from thinking things through in advance and taking time to do a bit of research. After all, you are trying to balance many different needs and preferences. Before you dive into planning, ask yourself:

  • What’s important to you?
  • What do you value most in your accommodations?
  • What do you want to experience during your vacation – what attractions are a must-see?
  • What can you (not) do without?

Our Money-Saving Tips for Your Vacation

1. Book Early or Last Minute: When’s the best time?

Early-bird discount or last-minute bargain? Both can pay off:

  • If you book early, you’ll often get the best rates and the widest selection of affordable places to stay. Early bookings are definitely worthwhile if you are traveling with a big family or a group of friends. Holiday homes and penthouses that sleep around 10 people are hugely popular – especially during peak times such as New Year’s – and tend to get snapped up very quickly.
  • Last-minute deals have the potential for great savings if you can be flexible with your travel dates. Decide based on the weather, your mood, or spontaneous inspiration. Weekdays are usually cheaper than busy weekends. The more flexible you are, the better the prices. Check out the offers, book – and you're ready to start packing your bags!
  • Staying longer often means paying less: Planning an extended getaway (10+ days)? Then it’s worth asking your host about long-stay discounts.

2. When’s the Cheapest Time to Travel?

Outside of the peak seasons and school holidays, accommodations are more affordable and destinations less crowded. Popular sights can be visited without standing in long lines. Even the hiking trails are quieter as well. Which all adds up to a more relaxing and budget-friendly vacation. Have you ever considered an autumn hiking holiday in Austria?

3. Should I Book Direct or Through a Booking Platform?

Booking directly with your host means no added fees – and sometimes even exclusive discounts or extras. That said, it's always worth comparing the hotel’s own website with the various booking platforms out there! Keep your eyes open for a “Best Price Guarantee”, which many accommodation providers offer. In that way, you can be sure you're getting the best possible deal on your stay.

4. How Can I Save on Activities at My Destination?

In many Austrian vacation regions, you will automatically receive a guest card. This gives you free or heavily discounted access to top attractions and sometimes even free use of public transportation. Premium summer cards like the Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard, Joker Card, National Park Sommercard, Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card, and Super.Summer.Card even include mountain lifts and various adventure opportunities!
Guest cards are especially worthwhile for families, experience-hungry holidaymakers, and longer stays. When planning your trip, check if your accommodation includes a free summer card as well as what summer cards are available for purchase in your chosen area.
Early birds can buy lift tickets for some ski regions online at reduced rates – so always check your ski area’s website in advance.

5. How Can I Save on Transportation Costs While on Vacation?

Parking fees and gasoline costs can add up quickly. However, many vacation destinations feature extensive bus networks, shuttle services, or even rental bikes, so you can often simply leave your car parked where it is. In SalzburgerLand, for example, all guests receive a Guest Mobility Ticket with their booking, which allows them to use public transportation throughout the entire region for free. And if you do need to drive: apps like “Clever Tanken” help you find the cheapest gas station nearby.

6. Is It Worth Cooking for Yourself during Your Vacation?

One big advantage of holiday homes and holiday apartments: you can cook for yourself and tailor meals to your own, and your travel companions’ personal tastes. It saves a significant amount of money compared to eating out at restaurants every day. Shop for local, seasonal products – maybe even at one of the many farmers’ or village markets. Plus, you can eat whenever and wherever you please, with no need to abide by a dress code or rigid buffet hours. Our easy recipes for your holiday home - such as Tiroler Gröstl or blueberry dumplings are perfect for holidays and quick to prepare.

If you're out and about during the day – let’s say, hiking – bring along your own snacks or a pack lunch (assuming you can resist the lure of a hearty snack of local bacon and cheese at a mountain hut 😋). On the other hand, hotel vacations come with more predictable costs: meals are typically included in the booking – whether you take advantage of them every day or not.

7. Take Advantage of Child and Family Discounts

Many recreational attractions, ski passes, and museums offer special rates for families with children. Ask in advance or check their website – family packages are often cheaper than buying tickets individually. Around Easter especially, many ski resorts have attractive family offers – and in some case, kids even ski for free.

8. Travel Together and Share the Costs

Sharing a large holiday apartment or holiday home with friends or family? Great idea! It lowers the cost per person and gives you more space and shared fun. Eat breakfast together, enjoy game nights or cook meals as a group: a holiday home provides the perfect setting for quality time together.

9. Enjoy Free Activities and Nature

Go hiking, swim in a lake, or attend free local events. There are plenty of activities that don’t cost a cent and are great fun for the whole family – or they are already included as part of the guest card (see above).

10. Choose Your Travel Insurance Wisely

Compare which travel insurance suits your vacation best and avoid unnecessary expenses. Often, you are already well covered through your existing policies. And to be fully prepared for all eventualities, we strongly recommend taking out holiday cancellation insurance.

11. Rent Your Gear or Buy Used Equipment

For sports like skiing or cycling, either renting or buying second-hand gear is often the smarter choice – more affordable and more convenient. Rental shops offer the latest models of skis and e-bikes. Check whether your accommodations include discounts at local sports shops on rentals or purchases.

12. Consciously Save Energy and Protect the Environment

Many hotels give you the option to skip daily room cleaning and towel changes. Even in a holiday apartment, it’s worth being mindful of heating, lights, and water usage. While it may not directly affect your vacation budget, it does conserve energy and help protect the environment.

Which Apps Can Help You Save on the Go?

Apps like “Clever Tanken” show current fuel prices so you can fill up for less. Transit apps help you use buses and trains more efficiently and cut down on mobility costs. Google Maps helps you locate nearby supermarkets for grocery shopping.

What Are Long-Stay Discounts?

Long-stay discounts are price breaks that are given for extended vacations. Many hosts offer reduced rates on stays for one or two full weeks or longer. These are especially attractive for so-called “workation" trips, where you combine vacationing with a little remote work.
By contrast, some providers do levy a short-stay surcharge. That’s because short stays entail greater effort for the host (cleaning, laundry, check-in/check-out) with somewhat lower revenue.

Bottom Line: Saving Money on Your Vacation

To save on your vacation, you need to clarify in advance: What’s important to you? What do you want to experience? What do you value – and what can you do without? Knowing these things lets you plan smart and save with ease. Vacations don’t necessarily have to be expensive. With guest cards, direct bookings, self-catering, smart timing, and more, you’ll have more money left over for those truly special moments.
