Winter holidays in the Schladming-Dachstein region

Skiing in Ski Amadé

It has been a long time since the Schladming ski area was just a secret insider tip. By the time the FIS Ski World Championships came around in 2012, the holiday region surrounding Schladming was already on the tip of everybody’s tongue. That said, the annual FIS Nightslalom for men, the legendary ski opening every year in December and, of course, the perfectly groomed pistes of the Schladming 4-Mountain Ski Area make the region surrounding your holiday home one of the most popular winter sports destinations in Austria. Though you can also look forward to pure winter enjoyment away from the pistes as well: for example, gliding along the ski trails of Ramsau am Dachstein, a true cross-country El Dorado, sledding down the hillsides or participating in après ski at one of 100 traditional ski huts.

Skiing holidays right next to the piste

Pure skiing enjoyment awaits you right outside your front door, since your ALPS resort lies right next to the ski slopes. The Schladming ski region is part of Ski amadé and has a total of 230 piste kilometers along with 84 ultra-modern lifts in store for skiing holidaymakers. The heart of the ski region is the Schladming 4-Mountain Ski Area. It brings together the ski resorts of the Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm for skiing enjoyment from one mountain to the next. The neighboring ski areas of the Fageralm, Ramsau am Dachstein Ski Region, Dachstein Glacier, Ski Galsterberg, Riesneralm and Planneralm are the icing on the cake.

In addition to the perfect pistes and unique panoramas of the Schladming mountains, the Schladming-Dachstein Region also adds funslopes and crossparks to its full palette of winter sports. One of our top tips, for example, is the XXL funslope on the Hauser Kaibling. And why not clock your speed on skis on the “Cool Running” hill at the Reiteralm.

Cross-country glacier skiing – Ramsau am Dachstein

At 2700 m above sea level amid the incomparable mountain scenery of Dachstein Glacier, you will discover the world’s longest glacier cross-country trail. Though needless to say, you also have the opportunity to pursue your favorite sport in the valley as well: As a hobby XCer, you will be as happy as a clam in Schladming or Haus-Aich-Gössenberg. 194 km can be enjoyed in classic style, 100 km using “skating” technique. And if you would merely like to watch, you might well want to stop by in December for the FIS World Cup in the Nordic Combined

Winter away from the pistes: sledding, fatbiking and snowshoeing

As a winter sports paradise, Schladming has a lot more to offer than skiing and boarding. For example, the floodlit sled runs on the Reiteralm and the 7 km-long natural sled run on the Hochwurzen. Or romantic sleigh rides. And have you ever heard of “fatbiking”? Ski tourers and snowshoers also find mountains of possibilities in Schladming-Dachstein. With opportunities certain to appeal to beginners as well as ambitious mountaineers and alpinists – guaranteeing you beautiful moments during your winter holidays amid the white landscapes of Styria!

Summer holidays in the Schladming-Dachstein region

Hiking, mountaineering and summer lifts in Schladming

Whole 1000 km of marked hiking paths and more than 50 mountain huts. 45 km of running and Nordic-walking trails. In our opinion, the only thing that tops this offer is the amazing scenery when you sit on the summit of the Stoderzinken (elev. 2048 m) and humbly enjoy the sunset. Or, quite simply, when you take a break and dangle your feet in the babbling waters of an icy-cold mountain stream.

If you prefer to overcome the initial climb without investing any effort, we suggest taking advantage of the summer lifts. Aboard the Hochwurzen, from the glass gondolas, you can enjoy the view of the mighty Dachstein massif. On the Planai, in contrast, you will be greeted by the highest playground in Styria. While the Reiteralm Preunegg Jet will carry you up to a true hiking paradise: From here, you can make a beeline to Mirror Lake and the Untersee, while the “Silent Waters” theme path. If you are in the mood for a little more action, you might wish to tackle the mountain bike trails, the Reiteralm Junior Trails (also suitable for children on push bikes!) or the Franzi via ferrata (a fixed-cable climb rated C/D). The mountain lifts are included with the Schladming Dachstein Card.

Adventure Holidays in Styria: via ferratas, rock climbing

A drive taking roughly 30 minutes will bring you from your holiday home to Ramsau. A true Eldorado for climbers and via ferrata enthusiasts. 22 of the 26 fixed-cable climbs total in the Schladming-Dachstein Region are located in Ramsau. 4 climbs designed especially for young children and teens as well as Kali’s Via Ferrata Garden are ideal for youngsters excited to learn the climbing basics. The oldest via ferrata in the Eastern Alps leads to the top of the Dachstein – known as the “Randkluft”. If you would like to enjoy a first taste of adventure sports, we suggest contacting one of our local mountain guides.

Holidays on 2 wheels: mountain biking and cycling

Schladming-Dachstein also has a lot to offer those of you who love leaning into your pedals. With opportunities for “Sunday cyclists”, E-bikers as well as mountain bikers. For MTBers in particular, we highly recommend spending a timeout at Alpenchalets Reiteralm: As of quite recently, new trails have been created practically nearly your holiday home. With 15 kilometers and 2 levels of difficulty. On the Planai, you will discover Bikepark 2.0 with 35 km of trails, a flowline for all abilities and the Jump Line with 99 (!) separate jumps.

Golfing in Schladming-Dachstein

Four 18-hole golf courses are located between the Dachstein and Schladminger Tauern. Golfclub Radstadt, Golfclub Schladming-Dachstein, Golf & Countryclub Schloss Pichlarn and Golf & Landclub Ennstral-Weissenbach all promise golfing experiences at the highest level – amid a magnificent natural setting.

Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard included

When you check into your ALPS resort, you will also receive the Schladming Dachstein Card – for admission to 100 all-inclusive attractions. These include mountain lifts, swimming areas and lakes, buses and toll roads, museums, sports and recreational facilities as well as numerous sightseeing attractions in the region. The Schladming-Dachstein Sommercard is valid for the duration of your stay including arrival and departure days (after 1 PM on arrival day, all day on departure day).

Our excursion tips

Tip 1: Dachstein Giant Ice Cave

In the mood to cool down a little? In that case, the Giant Ice Cave on the Dachstein in Obertraun will be the ideal destination for you. During a 20-minute guided tour, you will be able to marvel at this absolutely astonishing cave. Lighting effects and atmospheric background sounds stage the subterranean glacier, ice caves and sculptures to perfection. Yet another highlight: a suspension footbridge inside the cave, from where you are treated to unique 360° views of the millennia-old rock and ice formations.

Incidentally: The temperature inside the cave averages -2°C. Which means, warm clothing is definitely recommended.

Tip 2: Hauser Kaibling

Whether on skis or on foot – during your personal timeout in Haus im Ennstal, you should definitely explore the Hauser Kaibling. At an elevation of 2015 meters, it is one of the highest mountains in the 4 Mountain Ski Area of Schladming. Aside from numerous opportunities for refreshment stops, the Hauser Kaibling also treats you to magical panoramic views extending from the village of Haus im Ennstal far below to the landscapes beyond.

In winter, the mountain promises nonstop excitement thanks to 16 different pistes and a full range of difficulty. In summer meanwhile, numerous hiking paths invite visitors to experience this holiday region with all their senses.

Tip 3: Tree Horoscope Path

Nature lovers, this is for you! The Tree Horoscope Path in Gröbming was created especially for relaxed walks with the whole family.

What makes it unique: This theme path combines nature with history. For example, along the way you will discover your own Celtic Tree of Life and learn more about your personal character traits. Having reached your goal, you will be greeted by the historic Peace Bell. A heart-shaped window also rewards you with a magical view of Ennstal.

You can actual begin this hike from four different starting points. The walking time ranges from 1 ½ hours to 4 hours.

Tip 4: Silberkarklamm

Alpine terrain, wild waters and rugged rockfaces – Silberkarklamm is a true nature experience. Part of the imposing Dachstein massif, this gorge is popular with casual hikers as well as avid mountaineers. Thanks to secure walkways, the gorge is also suitable for families with children.

You can set out from the Alte Mühle car park in Ramsau or from the Silberkarklamm car park in Rössing. Making your way past torrential waterfalls and through idyllic nature, after a 35-minute walk you will reach the Silberkarhütte at 1250 meters above sea level – perfect for a refreshment break with your family. More experienced hikers and climbing fans might opt to continue their hike into the karst mountains and to three different via ferrata routes.
