Thanks to fully equipped kitchens, you will want for nothing inside your holiday home. Nevertheless, we heartily recommend discovering the rich variety of Styrian cuisine, every bit as varied as the surrounding landscapes. That said, the south is famous for its pumpkinseed oil, Brettljausen and Sterz,  whereas wild game, trout and sweet Spagatkrapfen are more commonly found in the north. Also typically Styrian: rotisserie chicken, Styrian-style scrambled eggs and Styrian boiled meat & veggies. Famous as a winegrowing center and also the biggest apple-growing region in Austria, a glass of wine or cider from Styria is an absolute “must”.

Popular Sightseeing Attractions in Styria

The sightseeing attractions of Styria are equally diverse. Right at the top of the list, of course, is the highest mountain in the province – the Dachstein. Greeting you there at 2700 meters above sea level is a glass-floored viewing platform, the highest suspension footbridge in Austria and a glass stairway. A head for heights is definitely an advantage. Also well worth a visit is the provincial capital, Graz. Here, there are so many different things to marvel at, including the clock tower on the Schlossberg, with splendid panoramic views extending all the way to the Murinsel, and the always-impressive Kunsthaus. Also particularly fascinating is the Lurgrotte – the biggest cave with stalactites in Austria. The numerous castles of Styria radiate historical charm, including castles Oberkapfenberg and Riegersburg. Schloss Herberstein grants intriguing insights into the past and, thanks to an animal park, is also popular with families with kids.

Annual Events in Styria

Hot tires and pure adrenaline are guaranteed at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg: Formula 1, the Moto GP and DTM draw huge numbers of motor sports fans to this small community in Murtal every year. A little farther north, since 1995 the Red Bull Erzberg Rodeo has guaranteed its own fair share of action. Within the scope of what is undoubtedly the toughest Enduro motorbike race in the world, hardened pros impressively demonstrate their astonishing biking skills. The same could be said about the spectacular ski race that takes place in Schladming. The Nightrace in Planai Stadium is an absolute magnet for visitors, a red-letter event on the World Cup calendar. If you are a fan of song, dance and a great party atmosphere, “Aufsteirern”, the biggest festival of folk culture in Austria, will be just what you are looking for. Celebrated for centuries and very much a living tradition, Ausseer Fasching takes places in the Salzkammergut. Actually, this colorful celebration has been a proud member of the UNESCO World Intangible Heritage List since 2016.
