Winter Holidays in Carinthia
Ski Holidays on the Gerlitzen
45 km of perfectly groomed pistes with 100% snow-making coverage await you just 150 meters from your apartment! The Gerlitzen ski area features runs with a full range of difficulty, 17 lifts and 15 km for freeriders – and panoramas that are magical! The friendly ski huts on the Gerlitzen are ideal for those refreshment breaks that are an indispensable part of each and every day of skiing in Austria. The Gerlitzen is also ideal for families and beginners. Thanks to a practice area and Schneebärenland, the youngsters will be transformed into true “pros” in practically no time at all.
Other ski areas less than 45 minutes away: Kranjska Gora with night piste (33 km), Tarvisio (39 km), Nassfeld (63 km) and Bad Kleinkirchheim (32 km).
Snowshoeing, Winter Hiking, Sledding
Away from the pistes you can also enjoy the beautiful side of winter. For example, taking a snowshoe hike in Dobratsch Nature Park (also guided) or on the Gerlitzen. Or on one of the seven winter hiking paths in the region. While sledding on the Dobratsch or in the Villach Alpen Arena. Skiing along one of the six cross-country trails, or ice skating. Or simply gazing out through the window of your apartment.
We have one more tip for you: Unique moments in nature are guaranteed during guided snowshoe hikes on the Dobratsch under a full moon as well as torchlight hikes guided by National Park rangers.

Lake experiences on Ossiacher See
Ossiacher See reaches temperatures as high as 26°C during the summer months. Here, fans of all kinds of water sports – yachtsmen, windsurfers, stand-up paddlers, boaters, water skiers and wakeboarders, anglers and divers – discover a magical “playground”. And let’s not forget the sun worshipers who spend the day bathing by the lake, love nothing better than to dive into the refreshing water. Dobratsch Nature Park, the Gerlitzen, the Ossiach Lake Trail and the Burgherren Runde. The hiking opportunities are many. And all of them are rewarding! The summer lifts on the Gerlitzen will carry you up to almost 2000 m above sea level. The views from up there are vast, with all of Carinthia at your feet. Various hiking tours ranging from easy to challenging are possible on the Gerlitzen. The pram-friendly Kanzelrundweg, for example, is a very popular excursion destination for families.
Cycling and mountain biking
Ossiacher Seeradweg, Drau Radweg, Karnischer Radweg, challenging mountain bike trails, family bike paths… The region which surrounds Ossiacher See offers variety-packed and utterly enjoyable routes for (E-)bikers and cyclists. And what better way to refresh your tired legs than by jumping into the cool, wet water which is never far away during a summer holiday in Carinthia!
Adventure holidays in Carinthia
Would you like to use your holiday in Austria to see the world from a whole different perspective? In that case, why not discover this beautiful region from high in the air! The Gerlitzen is one of the most beautiful mountains for aviators in all of Austria. With a launch area for hang- and paragliders located right next to the mountain station of the Gerlitzen summit lift. Our reception will be happy to share additional information with you about flight schools and various providers.
If you have an intrepid spirit, you might also wish to explore the Adventure Park on the Gerlitzen, Carinthia’s biggest high-ropes center, the Fun Park with tubing and mountain go-karts, or spend a day at one of our practice rock-climbing areas including the Kanzianiberg, Arnoldstein and Peterlewand.
Our excursion tips
Tip 1: Landskron Castle Ruins
Burg Landskron, with its Eagle Arena and Ape Mountain, is a marvelous excursion destination for the whole family. The toll road up to the ruins is an easy drive. In the Eagle Arena, we are always impressed by the acrobatics of the “kings of the air”. This 40-minute show with eagles and falcons is absolutely memorable. No less fascinating is Ape Mountain, home to approximately 160 Japanese macaques. If you would like to take a look “behind the scenes”, we suggest booking a private tour with an experienced animal keeper or primatologist.
Burg Landskron is also the starting point for the popular “Lord of the Castle Tour”. Taking approximately one and a half hours, it leads from the castle pond to the “Jungfernstieg” and the “White Wall”. Also be sure to set aside some time to pause and enjoy the views extending out across the Karawanken mountains and Ossiacher See all the way to the Julian Alps!
Tip 2: Villach
This city of 60,000 residents is always well worth a visit. We love to take a late-afternoon stroll through the streets of the historic district, enjoy an espresso in the café (– though that often turns into an ice cream on hot days 😊), browse the small boutiques… In other words, simply enjoy the “dolce vita” of this city on the River Drau. Villach is also famous for hosting Villacher Fasching and the Villacher Kirchtag. It is definitely fair to say that we love to celebrate! And since you are already in Villach, you should definitely pay a visit to one of the numerous markets: the Villach weekly market, for example, the organic farmers’ market or perhaps the specialty market with tasty tidbits from across the entire Alps-Adriatic region. There, you are certain to find the right ingredients for the dinner you plan on preparing in your apartment. Or for your hike on the next day of your holidays.

Tip 3: Casino Velden
Velden am Wörthersee has so much to offer in addition to its famous castle hotel. You simply have to take a stroll through what is probably the best-known holiday destination in Carinthia. Chic boutiques, bars and cafés, where the theme is “see and be seen” – and as the crowning conclusion, a visit to Casino Velden.
Tip 4: Dobratsch Nature Park
Naturally! The Dobratsch, Villach’s famous local mountain, is a must-see as well. An alpine toll road will bring you to the uppermost car park, the “Rosstratten”, at over 1700 m above sea level. Winter or summer, this protected nature park is always worth a visit. Regardless of whether you set out on extended hikes in summer or, in winter, go snowshoeing, ski touring or simply trudge along well-marked pathways through the glorious snow. The panoramas from the 2176 m-high summit – extending all the way to Slovenia and Italy – are truly breathtaking! I also highly recommend scheduling a refreshment stop at one of the traditional mountain huts!
Tip 5: Kärnten Therme
The “Kärnten Therme” in Warmbad-Villach. Immerse yourself in the soothing environment and relax completely. Or keep physically active, however you prefer. At this spa resort with in- and outdoor areas, big and small find all the opportunities they could wish for. Kick back or zoom down the slides (the longest slide, incidentally, is 86 m long!), enjoy a healthy sweat in the saunas and steam baths, or get in a complete workout logging laps in the 25 m sports pool. While the little tots get to splash-splash to their heart’s content in the toddler area. Best of all: With the automatically included guest card, all of this fun in and around the water of the Kärnten Therme is free of charge for our younger guests ages 15 and under!
