Vacation Region – Stubaital
Winter Holidays in Stubaital
The Stubaital, often called the “Kingdom of Snow,” definitely does honor to the name. South of Innsbruck, the valley extends for roughly 35 kilometers from Mieders through Telfes and Fulpmes to Neustift. Thanks to the Stubai Glacier – Tyrol’s biggest glacier ski area – snow is guaranteed from October to June. Altogether, four ski areas – Stubai Glacier, Schlick 2000, Elfer Lifts, and Serles Lifts – offer winter sports fans more than 100 kilometers of pistes and all levels of difficulty. Away from the pistes, 40 kilometers of cross-country ski trails, numerous winter hiking paths, toboggan runs, and countless ski touring routes promise variety-packed adventures in the snowy Tyrolean mountains.
Skiing Enjoyment in the Stubai Alps
At the heart of the valley lies the Stubai Glacier – without question its crowning jewel. Tyrol’s largest glacier ski area, at elevations of up to 3,210 meters, it guarantees excellent snow conditions from October through June. 26 state-of-the-art lifts and 65 kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes deliver pure skiing enjoyment for the whole family. A highlight for many is Austria’s longest glacier descent: a ten-kilometer run spanning 1,500 vertical meters, from the Schaufeljoch top station all the way down into the valley. Freestylers can cut loose in the Snow & Fun Park Stubai Zoo, while beginners practice their first turns in one of the local ski schools. At the Big Family Ski Camp, all children under ten receive a free ski pass when accompanied by a paying parent – so even the youngest skiers get their fair share of the fun. At the Eisgrat mountain station, the spectacular Top of Tyrol viewing platform at 3,210 meters offers you a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of more than 109 peaks above the 3,000-meter mark.
The Schlick 2000 family ski area above Fulpmes stands out with 22 kilometers of immaculately groomed pistes and a truly magnificent mountain backdrop. Families appreciate its compact layout and wide range of offers for the kids. From here, the view of the Stubai glacier world is simply unmatched. The smaller yet equally charming ski areas – Elfer Lifts Neustift and Serles Lifts Mieders – win guests over with well-maintained slopes and their warm, family atmosphere.
Cross-Country Skiing, Winter Hikes & Sledding in Stubaital
Cross-country skiing fans can look forward to a total of 40 kilometers of maintained trails throughout the Stubaital valley. Tracks for classic as well as “skating” technique wind through the snow-covered landscape, affording magnificent views of the surrounding 3,000-meter peaks. The trails are suitable for all ability levels and are mostly free to use. One local favorite – of residents and guests alike – is the valley trail from Neustift to Mutterberg.
The quiet beauty of the winter mountains reveals itself best on one of the many cleared winter hiking trails. More than 80 kilometers of marked paths lead through the 35-kilometer-long valley. And for fans of sledding, the biggest tobogganing area in all of Tyrol promises pure fun and excitement with a wide range of runs to choose from. Highly recommended: the 6-kilometer-long run from the Elfer, dropping all the way down to the center of Neustift and delighting visitors both young and old. In total, four floodlit hills also allow you to go sledding after dark – guaranteeing an utterly unforgettable experience under the starry sky. Ski tourers, too, value the Stubaital for its countless routes of varying difficulty levels, from gentler, more laid-back outings to challenging summit ascents of one of the 109 three-thousand-meter peaks in the region.
