This includes castles and palaces that transport you back to the Middle Ages, numerous impressive (pilgrimage) churches and museums, as well as places of astonishing power that give you an opportunity to “recharge your batteries” and refocus on the essentials.
Our excursion tips
Tip 1: Pilgrimage Site Mariapfarr
A visit to the pilgrimage Church of Our Lady and the Pilgrimage and Silent Night Museum in Mariapfarr is almost obligatory during any holiday spent in Lungau. And not just because it lies directly across from Carpe Solem Mariapfarr. Mariapfarr is actually the original Lungau parish and has been one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Austria for centuries. A museum was established at the parsonage in 2002, now home to the magnificent treasures of the basilica, including a silver reliquary altar from 1443. A section of the museum is dedicated to Joseph Mohr, the man who penned the words to the world’s most famous Christmas song. He served as assistant priest in Mariapfarr from 1815 to 1817, and it was indeed here that he wrote “Silent Night!”. The melody is by Franz Xaver Gruber.
Tip 2: Preber See
Legendary Lake Prebersee lies at the foot of the 2740 m-high Preber, roughly a 20-minute drive from your apartment in Mariapfarr. In winter, you can glide along the cross-country ski trail, show off your prowess at “ice stock” or zoom down the hillsides on sleds. Things take a more tranquil and reflective turn in Advent season, when the Ludlalm invites you to join them for Mountain Christmas.
In summer, the Moor Path is a particularly rewarding destination. It is an easy 45-minute stroll and even suitable for prams. Afterwards, youngsters can let off some steam at the adventure playground next to the Ludlalm, while you sample a plate of Lungauer Rahmkoch or Kaiserschmarrn-style pancakes. If you happen to spend your holiday here with us in Mariapfarr in August, there is a special event you simply have to see: the legendary “Prebersee Shoot”. Some 200 marksmen and -women with small-caliber rifles try to hit a target set up 120 m away. What makes this challenge so unique is the fact that they aren’t allowed to shoot directly at the target, instead attempting to get the bullet to ricochet accurately of the surface of the lake!
Tip 3: Weisspriach and Longa
Lungau boasts 60 alpine tarns. And most of those are in the region of Weisspriach, approximately a 7-minute drive from the Carpe Solem. In Upper Weisspriachtal, which is reachable via a toll road or on the valley bus from the Dicktlerhütte car park, you are greeted by an incredibly beautiful hiking area. A little piece of paradise with an array of mountain huts. The crystal-clear River Longa makes a serpentine track from the 1700 m-high Wirpitschsee, dropping in stages down to the valley, and flowing amid lush alpine meadows. Austrian TV viewers actually chose Weisspriachtal and the Longa as the most beautiful place in Salzburg back in 2015. While the Longa truly is enchanting (as well as a great place to go fly fishing and swimming) - you should definitely keep your eyes peeled! On occasion, the very rare Violet Copper butterfly might well indeed flutter by.
Tip 4: Burg Mauterndorf
The fortified tower of the former summer residence of Salzburg’s prince-archbishops is 44 m tall. It treats visitors to beautiful views of Mauterndorf and the surrounding mountains. Burg Mauterndorf is approximately 7 km from Carpe Solem and a great excursion destination for everybody in your family. On the big Knights’ Playground, young lords and ladies of the castle will be able to work off their youthful energy and let their imaginations run wild, too. With your Lungau Card, admission is free for your whole family.
Tip 5: Culinary Tips
Dining opportunities aren’t in short supply in Lungau either. And it isn’t just our own Restaurant Thomal at the Carpe Solem that promises a delectable experience. Let me quickly share a few culinary tips of my own with you: the Eachtling, for example. This name refers to a very special potato variety, a potato that has brought our region quite some recognition over the years. Also rewarding: a visit to Confiserie Hochleitner in Tamsweg and Trausners Genusswerkstatt in Mauterndorf. Though they are but 2 of the 300 extraordinary gourmet addresses you can discover along the 9 culinary pathways of the Via Culinaria in Salzburger Land. But if you are still of the opinion that homemade always tastes best, we suggest booking one of the popular bread baking courses with blogger Christina Bauer in Göriach.
